This is the "the saffron-colored one". It is the Spotted Hyena, or Laughing Hyena, (Crocuta crocuta).


Crocuta crocuta?
The term is derived from crocus, commonly used in the ancient world as a yellow dye. Literally, it means "the saffron-colored one".
Crocus
The name of the genus is derived from the Greek κρόκος, krokos (attested in Homer's Iliad, Book XIV, verse 347), this in turn being a Semitic loanword (Hebrew karkom, Aramaic kurkama, Persian and Arabic kurkum, all meaning saffron or saffron yellow). In Greek, the word is also used for the similarly colored egg yolk.

About the image…
It was definitely a close encounter. Car-wise:-).
There were five animals or so and their vocalizations were absolutely ‘on’. An unreal experience. No idea about the content of their communication.:-)
I was in the car just a few meters away and the animals weren't really paying attention to me.:-) I changed the position of the car several times, each time turning the engine on and off, opening and closing the (left and right)windows manually. Taking into account that when the car engine is turned off, there’s no air conditioning anymore…and thus my hypothalamus was sending a message to my body, telling it to sweat, sweat,…
in South Africa, the saffron-colored one. No matter what color.

One of these days, I must visit there! I like the closeness represented here. The texture is there, the POV is terrific, and they seem curious. I frequently watch shows on the Animal Planet channel here about the wildlife in Africa - these guys can hunt with the best of them.

This one seems either curious about your or intent on finding out whether or not you'd make a suitable meal...

The composition is beautiful, but what really helps this fellow stand out is your DOF. Thanks for taking the time to get this photo and sharing it. I am learning so much about the world around me by such wonderful photos and excellent notes.
