Often seen in Kruger National park. This photo was taken on the road from Lower Sabie to Tshokwane. It is lovely to see the splash of colour as they fly from tree to tree except when you are just ready to take a photo.

Lilac-breasted Roller
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lilac-breasted Roller, Coracias caudataus, is a member of the roller family of birds. It is widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa and the southern Arabian Peninsula, preferring open woodland and savanna; it is largely absent from treeless places. Usually found alone or in pairs, it perches conspicuously at the tops of trees, poles or other high vantage points from where it can spot insects, lizards, scorpions, snails, frogs, small birds and rodents moving about at ground level. Nesting takes place in a natural hole in a tree where a clutch of 2–4 eggs is laid, and incubated by both parents, who are extremely aggressive in defence of their nest, taking on raptors and other birds. During the breeding season the male will rise to great heights, descending in swoops and dives, while uttering harsh, discordant cries. The sexes are alike in colouration.

Hello Robin,

A very good composition with this Lilac-breasted roller singing (or shouting :-) ). Excellent POV, DOF and sharpness. Light and colours are great.
Cheers,
Mariki

Hello Robin,
Excellent photo of one of my African favourites. Beautiful colours and very sharp. Maybe a bit more contrast is possible. I made a workshop, not as a critique, but to show you what the result is when you do so.
Excellent timing, POV and composition.
Regards,
Peter

Super shot of one of the beauties of the Krugerpark.
I like it a lot.

Well done, Robin.
Lilac-breasted Rollers can be found along the road and they are very beautiful in flight as you mentioned in your note.
Well done. For instance a very good moment..
