Blesbok(Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi)
Length (including tail) 1,6 m, mass 52 kg
The Blesbok gets its name from Afrikaans for blaze ('bles'): a reference to the prominant white blaze on the forehead.
Blesbok occur on grassland, where water is available.
This animal was photographed in Dullstroom, which dates back to the early 1880's when Dutch Settlers made their way to the place of "eternal mist".
The town is situated at 2100 m above sea level, making this one of the highest towns in the country.
It is on the panorama route, halfway from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park.
Dullstroom has five claims to fame:
it is one of the coldest villages in South Africa,
it is South Africa's premier trout fishing area,
it is the home of the highest railway station (2076 m above sea-level),
it is the only place where elm and beech trees grow in any number and
it is also the only region in South Africa where you will find the endangered Crowned Crane, the Blue Crane, as well as the Wattled Crane which is critically endangered
The animal was photographed through the open window of a small car - i.e. I was at same eyelevel as the bok.
We usually go "into the mountains" at the height of summer to escape the Lowveld heat... |

Hello Ingrid,
A fine portait of a Blesbok ('bläsbock' in Swedish) taken from a an excellent POV to show its features and reason for its name with nice sharpness and colours against a pleasing OOF contrasting natural BG.
Thanks for posting this together with a good note.
Best regards,
Ivan

Hello Ingrid !
I'm back here and among all your new pictures this is the one that caught my attention - because it really shows a strange antelope with a strange name (sounds almost like our Alsacian dialect :-). it is a gorgeous species, which I didn't know before seeing your picture. The details on his face and horns are fantastic, and I also like the colors - very sober, very discrete, and not as warm as we can usually see on other Africa pictures. Nicely composed, too, and I like the fact that the Blesbok is looking directly at you. Very well done !
Valérie.
