Blackcollared Barbet (Lybius torquatus) Rooikophoutkapper

This is a medium sized bird of about 19 – 20cm in length.
Iris deep red to red- brown , bill black and legs and feet greenish grey to brown.
The face, throat and breast is bright red with hindcrown, mantle and broad band across lower breast black. Back is greyish olive , belly is dull grey and wings and tail edged with yellow.

Distribution: Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Eastern parts of Botswana, Kwazulu-Natal, Transvaal and Free state.

Habitat: Coastal Bush, Woodland, forest edge, riverine forest, parks and gardens.

Food: Fruit and insects.

This image was taken at Dikhololo, just North of Brits, the hometown of Japie Venter. I have a bird feeder in my garden in Krugersdorp and have regular visits of a pair of Barbets but have been unable to photograph them.
