[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Well, most guys (and gals) have been making good use of Callie’s theme, nl. “Just Missed” or “Near Misses” so I thought that I would join in.

The reason for this post is to share some techniques which helped me to get a couple more "Hits" from the "Misses"

A lot of you have commented on my “Joker”(thank you very much for that), so I have decided to post all the frames leading up to that moment as well as the frames after that (lucky) shot and have done so in a Large post


Out of six rapid shots, I managed to get only one that was a hit. I have adopted the technique of shooting a lot of shots in rapid succession, especially when I try to shoot animal behaviour. This technique produces more missed shots, but invariably there is one in a series of flops that is a hit. This way I have not cut down on the misses, but got a couple more hits.

Another technique was changing a habit that I had inherited from my 35mm days. This was to do the composition at the point of taking the actual picture. Doing so was good in the old days, but often resulted in the clipping wings, tails, horns etc. I have now resorted in taking shots of a bigger area around the subject (especially where there is a lot of movement) and doing the composition at a later stage on my pc from the comfort of my office chair.

I still shoot lots and lots of missed shots but the above techniques helped a lot and I hope by sharing this someone will benefit from it.

Perfect illustration of hits and misses, the difference can be so small between them.

I almost like this montage as much as the orignal "joker". I find it particular interesting that you kind of "framed" the laught between two shots showing the zebra with a verious serious attitude. And each of these photos are really good.. I wouldn't call this a miss.

You shoot, you miss, you score and you learn, and this series shows this very well. I stand by what I said about the Joker, the best PJ donkey I have ever seen. So, this is how to get it. Be a Boy Scout, be prepared. And yes, zoom out, not in!

Here in Poland we have got proverb 'Kon by sie usmial' which can be translated as 'Horse could be laughting' and means something not very funny. Looks like zebras likes laught too :-) Great presentation Japie.

You should call this, just hits, and no just miss. All of them are wonderful, I liked very much to see close your "joker" and enjoy the quality of your shots. Excellent note too. I try to use this technique when shooting insects , but my burst mode is very slow :( Thanks.
