| Being a bush lodge in a National park, we find a lot of snakes at Bakubung. The most common ones being the Mozambique spitting cobra, but also mamba and pufadders. This one is a very large pufadder that we caught. Afetr catching them we remove them from the lodge and return them to the park. The pufadder is one of South Africa's most venomous snakes, and the venom is haemolytic in its action, which means it attacks the cells of the flesh it is injected into. A bite will cause a gangerene like action and it is not uncommon to loose a limb or part of the flesh at the wound. The slight glare on the left is the glass over the transport box. This snake as can be seen by the pose of the head was very agitated, and I won't dare to get that close without protection. |
