Common Dotted Border / Mylothris agathina

Today's posting I would like to dedicate to my mother-in-law Nita Eksteen. She is a remarkable woman in every way, who taught me so much in life. "Thank you mommy - I appreciate you for the great person you are!"

As Mothersday is celebrated today, I also would like all ladies, and not only the ones that are mothers to share in this dedication. I personally think every woman is born with a motherly instinct, and they should all be included in this special day, set aside and celebrated as "Mothersday". In my personal opinion there shouldn't be a specific day set aside like Mothers or Fathersday as parents or older folk should always (every day) be treated with love, dignity, and respect and they should always know that.

I am a big sucker for all kinds of poems and verses, and gather and keep it to maybe give to the "grandchildren" some day. While looking through these collectibles for something special to put down in writing for Mothersday I came upon these two "treasures". Upon reading the contents, the words filled me with nostalgia and I'll like to share it with you.

WHAT IS A MOTHER?

A Mother is a human being, capable of making mistakes. She is not perfect, just as none of us are perfect, but she is the one that we picture as being perfect during our childhood. As we become older, we realise that Mothers are capable of right and wrong ways of doing things, missing the mark, just as much as the next person, but she is still Mother. The thing that sets her apart is her everlasting love for her children and her intent that they lead normal, well-adjusted lives.

Not until we become adults, do we really begin to appreciate who Mother really is. She has nurtured you through your childhood, put up with your sassy ways and times of being lazy during your teenage years, and cried through your becoming an adult. Mother was always there to encourage you when you made a mistake, although sometimes it's hard not to show disappointment.

As we grow older and have our own children, we realise that Mother was a very strong person, and we begin to wonder if we can ever fit into her shoes. No, we can never do things the same as our Mother, although she has given us the pattern from which to build.

Mothers are special. If your Mother is still alive today, try to make this Mother's Day the most wonderful day of her life! Show her you care only by telling her you love her. If she stays far away, pick up the phone and call her. If she is close-by take her out to eat, or surprise her with flowers. If at all possible, show up on her doorstep. You will never know how much this will mean to her knowing her family still cares. Sometimes we get busy doing the usual things in life, and lose sight of the most important aspects - loving our family. Mother happens to be where that 'family' began. Without Mother, there would never have been a family.

Keeping all the above words in mind, I cannot but share a short poem about a mother-in-law, and these words are most applicable to Loot's mother, as if I could have written the words myself and THAT is the reason why she deserves this dedication. She has always been like my own mother to me.

STAR MOTHER-IN-LAW
Some mother-in-laws are possessive
Their child they still want to own
My mother-in-law’s love is like sunlight
On both of us it shone

Some mother-in-laws put you down
They think you’re not good enough
My mother-in-law shows approval
Affection, and other good stuff

Some mother-in-laws interfere
They think that they know best
My mother-in-law lets us be
She’s better than the rest

And so I just want to thank you
For being who you are
You’ve made everything so easy
As a mother-in-law, you’re a star!

I salute all women out there and specially present to you on Mothersday, this beautiful Common Dotted Border (Mylothris agathina), resting on an orange coloured Ixora shrub.
I am only going to give a general description of all Dotted Borders in this genus.

Genus Mylothris
These butterflies have more gentle, sailing flight than most other pierids. Usually found close to the food plant slowly floating through the foliage of trees. Fond of flowers. White to yellow and orange, sometimes very brightly coloured. Eggs laid in large batches. Cylindrical, elongated, but more barrel-shaped than other Pierinae; tapered towards blunt top, with numerous vertical ribs and many fine cross ridges. Larva gregarious; green to brown or black, shiny, with short hairs, and small raised dots. Pupa ornate, brightly coloured in white, yellow or green marked with black; several protruding knobs on dorsal surface of thorax; 3 or 4 curved dorso-lateral horns projecting outwards at base of abdomen; back curved head horn.

Hi Anna,
I appreciate your dedication of this lovely picture to Loot's mom on this Mothers' Day. I also read your note with the picture with avid interest. I must say you write well and touch human hearts.
Your picture is a fascinating combination of green, yellow, red and black. The butterfly is a novelty for me and it is, indeed, a beautiful species. Those black spots along the edge of the wing look marvellous.
Overall, it is a wonderful composition.

Today is the third year since my mother has passed at age 93. She loved nature much more than anyone. both her and dad were true inspirations to me. too bad I leanred to understand things until they were so much older. I wish I had them here today to share the things which I have learned on TN.
Your image is a good heart tugger. It is also as coloured without over saturation...but blending together well into a "happy pallet". Very nice dedication and image!

Hi Anna,

Not only a beautiful picture but beautiful notes as well. The colors are truly outstanding. The butterfly is marvelous - not sure I have seen this one before. The yellow and orange with the black markings along the edge are exquisite. The flower is lovely and the perfect color. Fine details with the leaves making an excellent background.

a nice capture of this beautiful butterfly!
The composition is great and the parallel POV works very well with the DOF.
Good lighting and wonderful colours.
Lacks some detail but that is the only nit.
A great dedication to Loot's Mum :-) (It's interesting though, the Mother's Day in Britian is celebrated 3 weeks before Easter Sunday which was a couple of months ago!)

Hello Anna. This is such a beautiful dedication. The image with strong colors look like a painting in the thumbnail. This Common Dotted Border is not common at all as far as I am concerned. Wow.....what a beautiful butterfly! A perfect gift for your mother-in-law on this special day and she sure would have been happy. This truely is an attractive image with red/yellow/green colours giving the eye so much delight and the mind immense joy. I love colours and the child in me still rejoices seeing those flashes. Dear Anna,
It's mango season here in India as summer heat peaks up and this is so reminiscent of this luscious ripe fruit.This butterfly has a special colour so rich and radiant and so "mangoey".You have captured magnificent details in this macro and the black spot pattern wing-end is wonderful.

A great dedication on Mother's Day and all credits to Nita Eksteen for being such a wonderful mum(in-law).

A lovely dedication to Loot's mother and also all other mothers on mothers day. A great note to celebrate our beloved mom’s who also happen to be wives and companions for someone that appreciate them on a daily or ongoing basis. This butterfly is a joyful sight, full of colour and well presented on the beautiful Ixora flower. Good work to photograph it up close with the rest of the plant a little bit removed into the background. The insect and the flower pops up in the photo.

Die hele pakket is een om te waardeer. Moeders wat nog daar is teenoor wie ons liefde kan betoon en moeders wat ons vooruit gegaan het vanwie net pragtige herhineringe oorgebly het. Soms is daar ook die hartseer vanweë die verwydering, maar ons troos ons daaraan dat hulle beter daaraan toe is en nie meer hartseer en pyn ken nie.

Hierdie kleurvolle skoenlapper en pragtige blom is 'n heel gepaste wyse vir die toewyding. Die foto trek 'n ou se aandag selfs op die klein weergawe (wat noem mens nogals 'n "thumbnail" in Afrikaans?) Hierdie een het ek terdeë geniet, dankie baie.

Dear Miss Piggy (Anna)
Today I cannot say much about your image or your notes. There are just to much in both that reminds me of my mom, and although years have past since I have lost her, she will always remain the most important person in my life. Any mother and child share a special bond that nobody can take away or replace. Orange and yellow was my mom’s special and most loved colours and your image is filled with that. That is one of the reasons why I am touched more than usual by your image.

Hej Anna,
a beautiful picture to celebrate your mother-n-law, I know she will love it. Mothers-day up here is in the end of May, the 25th. My mother passed away for 18y so I also will celebrate my mother-in-law, 90y old.
About the picture the colour are varm and rich, good sharpness with fine details. The DOF i also very good, the in subject standout well from the BG.
And the note is great as usual.

Hi Anna

A lovely dedication to my mom. I am sure she will be all smiles (from ear to ear) when she has the opportunity one day to see it. We will obviously make sure of that when she comes to visit next time.

This is a beautiful butterfly and as I told you before, you are finding insects in the garden which I have never seen in 22 years while working in the garden. I just love the green BG and the bright orange Ixora with the brilliant yellow insect. A spectacular burst of colours.
