Bee-eaters belong to the Family Meropidae . There are 26 species worldwide, 19 off found in Africa. We have only 9 of these in SA. Bee-eaters are brilliantly coloured aerial insectivores, and they are often found in flocks. Most breed colonially in burrows, which they excavate in sandbanks and even just a raised portion next to a road.

Carmines are long-tailed with a pinkish-red chest, turquoise crown, light blue rump & vent. Juveniles lack the long tail streamers, and have brown, not caramel coloured backs. They are common summer visitors in our region, but are restricted to our northern areas.

I have been trying now for many years to get near enough to these beauties without them taking exception and flying off. They only arrive in lower Kruger around middle December, and these were shot in the northern half of the park. He was quite high above me in a dead tree, and some shots were possible.

I tried something new with this post – hope you like it. I lost my PC last week, including my CS, now it is back to old PS7. Luckily, I did not loose my photographs. We live in one of the highest lightning strike areas in the world, and I have lost modems and my hard drive before. So, this was most probably again some force of nature.

Hi Callie, sorry about the PC, but pleased you have still got your photos. A good reminder for us to keep saving them more often on CD's or whatever.
Good captures of the Bee-eaters - they must move fast if they are aerial insect catchers. Composition and details and colours good. Well shown, thank you.

Well captured, Callie.
Good colours and sharpness, great Bg.
The bird is beautiful, good work!

Well done!
