[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This was an insane amount of work. Gerhard started it, and now I have enrolled in a course to try get to grips with this fiendish programme, called Photoshop. I have been trying it in my own way for two years, doing the basics, and less. Now, I know about a thing called levels, and suddenly, things I could never do, is possible. I have posted 2 WS’s - The one is the original photograph, the other a “play in PS”, not finished off, not well planned, but the essence is there! Please comment and help – it will be appreciated.

The process here is simple, but not with a subject like this Ground Squirrel. You start off by Image, Duplicate. PS makes a new copy, and you can close the original, save and sound.
Now, duplicate layer under Layers. You can delete the first layer, since it is locked and you can not work on it. Now you duplicate the layer again. Make sure you click on the top layer in the Layer Palette.

Now, go to Image, Adjustments, Desaturate. This changes the top level to B&W, but it does not change the colours like in Image, Mode. Now, use the eraser, and start rubbing out the top layer over the squirrel. (the body is 90% and is easy, and takes 5% of the time. Now you change the size of the brush to 1 pixel, and start on each hair of the tail, and work for more than two hours, if you are a beginner like me.

Then highlight the bottom, coloured layer on the Layers Palette, enhance the image as you wish, do the same with the B&W layer, flatten the layers to save as jpeg, otherwise it can only be saved as a .psd file. Now frame as normal. Comments and critiques welcome – Steve – you started the Arty debate - here is one for that category, and still fully in Nature.

Gerhard has already posted info on this delightful little rodent, so I hope the PP info is worth more.
I will comment tomorrow, so dare this post tonight. I will also later post another one, with shooting info. This one was less than two meters ways, free, and no cropping.

Great shot Callie! Very nice work you have done here and thanks for sharing your learning experience. The little squirrel is very cute and the pose is great. Well done.

A cross between the red squirrel and a chipmunk. I thought my fly wanting a kiss was ugly, holy cow, this thing's ugly!!!
Excelent capture and details and well composed.

The fun photoshop, hmmmm, interesting hair dooo. :)
Callie, you have potential, which is good. Keep working, bud. :)

You're a good photographer. :) :)
Mike

Thank you for your cheering note, Callie. I also think sometimes PS is a full-time job! It's like an iceberg. You just use the surface. 90% is to be discovered. Anyway, I like your little squirrel. Funny pose, very good photography and a great PP work. Good exercise!

Sympathique spécimen, une belle prise de vue. Félicitations !

Nice shot! I really like the pose on this one, it's fascinating to read that they actually use their tails as a shelter from the sun - although that makes sense I suppose! Here they should use them to keep the rain off ;)

Photoshop is fun when you get into it, and part of the fascination is that there are numerous ways to achieve the same goals! If you want to do selective desaturation the quickest way is probably to use the Sponge tool (use a large brush for large areas and then touch up using a smaller brush and/or a lower flow rate), although you won't get as much control as you did with the layered approach you used it is faster IMO. Please be careful though, I don't want your any of your excellent pictures removed for excessive post processing!

Good capture, and well processed too! I look forward to your next capture of this little one :-D

Hi Callie, very cute.
Welcome to the world of PS. It's a great program and the best to learn it, it's to play with it. I have used this since the version 5, and I'm still learning.
You made a good job.
Very well done, my friend.

Very nice shot Callie. I agree, it is arty, but also true to the aims of TN.
Photoshop sounds a bit complicated and time consuming to me. I'm a bit speedy and haven't the patience. I use Irfanview for most of my PP. Its very quick and simple.
I have other programs like photoimpression and the microsoft digital image suite, but don't use them much.
The clarity and detail is great here, and,as usual,a very good note.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Photoshop Callie! Good to see you playing, I'm a firm believer that after a certain level of camera competency is reached, the thing that makes the most difference to a shot is the post processing skills of the photographer.

This is very nice Callie,
I must say a very fast shot with a great composition, very good pof, great dof, I like the fine details, lovely shot Callie

Goede morgen Callie,

"Levels" is a word that makes my mind go blank Callie. So if you can do it, mayme i can. I've copied you notes and might give it a go - one day.
Good result with the squirrel though!

Hello Callie, you've posted a picture again (missed your posts!) and it's great. :) I absolutely love the b/w background, it draws so much more attention to the subject this way. The squirrel itself is great, pose is perfect (with the tail on his back). Lightening is great. You did some amazing stuff in Photoshop, well done. I am already glad I learned how to clone out some nasty stuff, but you are lightyears ahead of me. :) TFS!

Toni

Great shot Callie, great pose and good sharpness. The B&W BG's coming out very well.
Well done.
TFS.

Hay Callie!
What is doing your squirrel? Fot me it looks like making something intimate :-) I think it has nothing to do with a sun ;-)

First of all great picture of squirrel in interesting pose. But also great note with excellent advices about PS techniques. Thanks a lot Callie! Ashy BG looks much better.

Callie, Your PP here sounds too much like torture to me! ;-)) I found a link for Elements 3 that lets me download small tutorial video files that has helped me recently..I can actually form my own customized borders now. I'm like you. I've been using my program to perform only the basics up till now..Hey, I think they should include a large bottle of Bayer aspirin in every software package!! It's a great shot, Thanx.

Pragtig! Baie goed gedoen, Callie. Exceptional post and editing work. You chose a difficult subject with all the hairs to edit. To makes a lovely contrast for the BG. Excellent work well done.

"Note the tail position, they use it as a brollie to ward off the sun from their bodies". It is the same behavior for our squirrels in summer AND in winter for to protect themself against the cold, Callie (I will post a grey squirrel soon). But it is cute in both country.
Photoshop is a great 'toy' with which we ca play during hours. Be aware to not become too dependent on this game. I look at it like a tool to enhance my photos and to make WS for TN. But it steals the time which we could dedicated to more important things. It is like a video game...
I like your picture and I know the time you spent to realise it but I prefer the original shot for its more realistic character. And that gives a less tasty note... for me, but certainly useful for some other members.
Thanks and have a good week.

Two hours, Callie you love punishment. Still its a very interesting result. Very nice original capture as always.

Wow Callie, this is a great post. He is a charming charachter. I love how it has used the tail as a sun block. Congrats on the hard work. A whole new world ahead of you now! Nice work. TFS
