For Loot

Two Gemsbok males having a go at each other in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier park. When sitting and watching them one can hear the horns cracking against each other. I have heard from a Namibier that if a stone is thrown at a Gemsbok he will accurately hit it with his horns. I do not know how true this is but maybe our cricketers can learn from them.

On our trip of 6 days we saw over 40 of them on one day and on the two following days about 15 on each day.

Baie mooi Robin, wens ek was nou daar. Ek het ook al daardie storie van die klip gehoor, en dit klink waar, maar nou-ja, 'n kampvuur en 'n bier is seker maar die plek vir stories. Baie mooi aksieskoot, goeie sluiterspoed.

Hello Robin,
A great action shot capturing these two Gemsboks sparring. The timing, POV and composition all contribute to a fine image, the crossing of the horns and the curled tails enhancing the composition.
TFS this beauty,
Ivan

Hola Robin: Excelente toma, de muchas calidad y con un entorno increible, además de un momento hermoso, ver estos estupendos animales luchando es un lujo...gracias.Luis.

Hi Robin,

I think this is a really nice action shot. I love the poses of each. Those horns look so lethal... but perhaps too long to do much damage unless they were able to impale the opponent. If they got that low they wouldn't be able to see what they were doing. It is a nice sharp image. Thanks for sharing it.

Hi Robin

Now this is a treat. Not just 1, but 2 of Africa's most beautiful antelope which I still haven't had the opportunity to photograph and would just love to get in front of my lens. Probably you read my critique on Christian's gemsbok just the other day where I expressed my desire to photograph this antelope. I only once had an opportunity to do so, in the Pretoria Zoo, but as I approached the gemsbok in the open area "African Savanna Waterhole" they all vamoosed to the other side of the enclosure. Some day I'll get my chance to visit the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park or one of the facilities in Namibia where one could meet up with these majestic animals and then I will put my flash memory in overdrive.

Thanks for this neat shot that you've dedicated to me. The bonus action is great. It is tough enough finding a gemsbok to capture, but it is a real bonus finding 2 having a scrap. This is serious stuff as it could easily mean the death of one of the combatants. They're living in a hostile environment where live is rough and survival of the fittest are a given. The details are nice, sharp and clear even showing the dust these 2 are kicking up. The midmorning lighting was well controlled. The aperture ensured a good range for the DOF and the shutter speed was perfect to freeze the motion of the warriors.

Very well done and TFS.
Regards
Loot
