Or the scarf,or the wrap - now this would be very unfortunate should he end there, eh?

This is our only true fox, the Cape Fox - Vulpes chama 35 cm at the shoulder, weighing in at about 3 kg. This is NOT a thief, although they are nocturnal and very shy. More than 20 000 of these little beauties have been hunted down and killed in our Free State Province during the 1960’s and 1970, due to ignorance! They were maligned as lamb killers, while their staple food are mice, insects, gerbils, lizards and spiders. Hence, an ally to the farmers instead of a villain. During the day, they shelter in dens – holes dug in the sand or borrowed from springhare or aardvark, or in groundcover below thickets. It uses a drawn-out, high pitched howl to communicate with other foxes.
Our trip to the Kalahari had several wish list subjects on them, inter alia this cute guy, whom we have never seen before. I would have been happy with just a sighting of him, but was lucky to get at least five descent shots, this one being the most unsuccessful of the five. As usual the sighting was . . . on my wife’s side of the car! I had no time to get into the back seat, so just sort of leopard-crawled onto her lap and poked the lens through the window into the face of Mr Foxie here.
I am happy with my results, because from his very pink ears, you can see that the sun was just rising behind him, adding a little halo to his head.

Very nice pose of this little beauty.Lovely morning light, good colors and details.Interesting note as usual.

Hi Callie.
I like the big ears and brown colours tones.
Good details, very good composition and of course a great note.
Great works.

bonsoir Callie,

Excelent view of the fox. Early morning shot make good ones, the sun's hues are warm colors which make shots like this beautiful.
Well done

This is Beautiful! Jackols and Foxes are very high on my wish list and it is shots like these that push them even higher.

The sharpness and exposure here is excellent and I like the composition.

Very well done and thanks for posting

What an amazing little fox. Cant say iv ever seen one of these. Great lighting in this shot. Thanks for posting this one.

Very nice capture of this fox. Sounds like you really had to scramble, so that makes it better. Foxes in North American have more conventional sized ears, so this one really caught my attention. As always, yor notes are great too.

Hi Callie. It must have been a nice day start to find this little fox resting quietly and having at the same time the sun coming to draw his first shades on the ground. Kind of circumstances to put you in a good mood for the whole day, even if it was on the other side of the car :-). After what I've red, are they still numerous, or is it a rare encounter? I like very much the atmosphere here, even if the subject looks partly out of focus (perhaps heat effect). Ears and eyes are amazing, but you can't miss the fact it's acousin of our european fox here.

Prachtig Callie!

Nice pic Callie,

A suggestion: Have your ever tried to sit on the roof top during your safaries? Much better view.

Thanks,

Hendrik

Very interesting subject Callie. I haven't seen one in a long time. Nice composition and I like the tonal range in the shot. Well done. Great shot!

His ears are much large than our fox. They would quickly freeze here.
Congratulations for this great post, Callie.
Thanks
