Parabutus raudus are up to 160 mm long. This guy was at least 130 mm long and VERY angry at having his rest disturbed. These scorpions dig a shallow burrow at the base of vegetation in sandy soil, and are also found under surface debris and on shrubs. This is the largest and most common scorpion found in the Kalahari. When provoked extremely, this species can spray their venom!

These last three pictures posted illustrate and describe a little bit of the fascinating aspects of scorpions, and show the size of the tail and the venom vesicle. Look at the size of the aculeus – sting, and imagine meeting this guy by accident. These three pictures were NOT of the highest quality, I agree, but as I have mentioned before, we should share about nature through photography, and sometimes even a bad picture is better than no picture at all! This also illustrates the “in the environment” problems often encountered in the field. You have NO control over when and where you will see the subject, what the BG may be or even the inmates sharing his nesting domain. As for his friend, some of you know what it is, I have some nice shots of these guys as well, but they are for later.

I think it should have been titled

"Damn it Judith, this love was never meant to be. I mean, just what do we have in common?"

Ok, it's a bit long for a title. Good capture Callie. Unusual as you say...

Great shot Callie.
Very good details, colours and composition.
Great note like always.
Excellent work.

Wow Callie! amazing shot.
Excellent close-up, this is much better than your last scorpion.
The sharpness is excellent and the POV is really good, the colors are great and the composition is very good too.
The stones around the insects are perfect and the flash worked very well.

Fantastic macro Callie, good work

Heavens above Callie, i'd hate to see one 160 meters long.
Fascinating subject, great capture, good sharp image.
Great note.

I suppose you didn't ask him to smile! I'm impressed by the size - 160 mm is enough for me -:) and how well their color serve as camouflage in the sand. Seen from the focal lenght, you were not in reaching distance, much better than trying a detailed macro of his head. Very interesting shot, Callie

That's what I like about nature, natural occuring areas that we don't have to pretty up for pictures.
Excelent post, Callie. This composition shows the beauty of nature. Well done on this composition. he can keep that stinger thank-you very much. :)

Mike

Callie, I like your note today. Hey, the studio is the field & it's so true, we can't always pick where we stumble across an interesting find. "Learning about nature - through photograpy"! It's the the best benefit/outcome in the final analysis once the photo "BUG" has bit ya!! Excellent macro. TFS!

I think scorpio says 'my dear, winter is coming and we need new shoes for you. we will bankrupt!' :-)
Amazing scene Callie!

Two for the price on one, Callie. I agree with your comments - sometimes it is nature in the raw that you want to show - not the prettied up shots.
I still don't like scorpions tho! Good and interesting "showing". Thank you.

Hey I agree with with your comments about quality. This site is for sharing knowledge of natures wonder, its great if its pin sharp, but as you say, that's not always possible. And the note on this series more than make up for any lack of quality.
This shot is interesting TFS.

Not so strange after all... I have read somewhere that this species feeds on milipedes. It leaves me with one question: Is it sharing a bed or a plate with a centipede? :) I am so grateful for this series and never knew they sprayed their venom. Great shot and fabulous series on these strange bedfellows (I also heard in winter they get inside the beds and shoes for warmth) :)

Very nice shot, good details and note.
Well done.
TFS.

Good capture Callie, and thats not a small milleped either. TFS
points long gone today just trying to catch up with whats been posted.

You bring very unusual images to us, and nice note to complete them. You chose very well the focusing aim to get this two subjects into DOF. Again amazed how you can get this only with zoom and no macro. Very good work.

I really appreciated this series on the scorpions, Callie, even if I did not comment on them individually. There is a great deal of excellent presentations on TN at present. I notice that even if the quantity of new members does not increase fast, the quality of photos and the notes improve largely.
I never met a scorpion yet. I think I better like them in photos like yours, very away from me.
Maybe I still fell in the trap to comment only the photos which inspire me...

Thanks for sharing and to remind me what is really important here.
