This is the Giant Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa nigrita). The habitat for this bee is Fynbos (where this one was found), succulent karoo and dry savannah woodland. It feeds its young with a dry mixture of pollen and nectar.

I had to use the 170 – 500mm lens to get these, as this guy took off every time I came too close – nothing wrong with his eyesight

Very good Japie. the clarity id excellent. Well done

Japie. A most excellent presentation with a great inset "action" shot of the in-flight! Good balance between the very light and the very dark of the subject itself. Great detail seen in both frames also..Very well done!!

Buen encuadre y presentacion general.

Now also you will compete with me with these winged giants... is not just.
Excellent composition Japie... the quality of both images is superb.
Perfect POV, sharpness and DOF in the greater one whereas in the image in flight, the detail of the wings in movement is wonderful.
Good frame and general presentation.

Very good macro Japie.
Your long zoom is not easy to handle for these shots.
You manage very well.
Very good sharpness , colours , composition and DOF.
Great job.

Belle capture, surtout en 400mm et plus on peut admirer l'insecte en vol. Beau et instructif !
Well done !

Very nice work Japie, another species that I haven't seen before. Very good pair of shots with good detail and colour. Thanks for sharing.

In this to shots looks really beautiful, and I think I wouldnt have liked in most situations, it is ugly. You could have done two separate ones, both images are very good.

i love more the little one in right corner!

wONDERFUL, BEAUTIFUL SHOT, CLEAR, BRILLANT COLOR, AND A FANTASTIC BEE. I used to wander in my GARDEN before work or school every morning taking shots trying to catch bees in action. My neighbors found this very suspicious. Of course they never had flowers or anything but grass. I made my yard a forest!
