I know this is not too sharp, but I simply had to post this one. It took about a whole loaf of bread and around 80 shots to get this image. At the Somerset West botanical gardens they have a beautiful dam with all kinds of birdlife around it. The visitors are allowed to feed the ducks bread but when it lands in the water, the Bishops can’t get to it so they have resorted to trying to catch it in mid-air. After each attempt this guy would return to the same perch, ready for another try. I have taken shots of birds in-flight, flying past me, but never towards me and surely nothing this small and quick. I set my camera to manual focus as well burst mode and then fired off a couple of shots each time this guy took off. Needless to say, this was easier said than done! To get more DOF and and a better chance of getting a shot that is in-focus I used F/10 with an external flash. This shot was one of the last before our bread ran out.

I have sharpened this image extensively and adjusted the brightness and contrast. Please comment if you have any ideas on how to get this sharper and other ways of taking this type of shot. I have a vital statistics sheet of the Yellow Bishop posted in one of my earlier postings.

All comments are welcome, I’m wearing my helmet again.

What can I say, it's a great capture. Only the face is in focus so there is a very good feeling of movement. Nice bright colours and good compositon. Very well done.

A very good capture.
Excellent motion blur and good sharp focus on its head.
It looks to be heading straight at you and with quite a menacing look!
A great shot,well done.

Very nice capture Japie,
What a capture, what a speed, I love the colours, stuning shot, well done Japie

Japie, Think it's a great shot, and the animal is magnificent! As Paul stated the head is clear enough and the intention is to show movement right? I'd like to see the after shot at the point of impact when the bird runs into your lens!!!

This is a nice shot Japie, The sharpening worked for you. ISO up to 1/1000 should have given you more detail on the wing. I admire you persistence in getting you shot. Nice work.

Like the motion captured here with the vivid colors, and the way the bird seems to attack you ;-) Good composition Japie !!

Wow... que gran captura.
No se si hubieras elegido manualmente otra velocidad, si la imagen sería tan agradable (automatico o manual???)
Bellos colores, gran composicion del ave en movimiento.
Bravo Japie!

Wow... that is a great capture.
Not if you had chosen manually another speed, if the image would be so pleasant (automatic or manual???).
Beautiful colors, great composition of the bird in movement.
Bravo Japie!

Japie, this is a great capture! I do not think you are going to get it any sharper in post processing. The image is going to deteriorate. I think you have captured action and movement nicely.

A good shot Japie
Good action with very nice color.
Good note
Well done

Great feeling of movement , just love the wings blurring but still seen,it is great shot ans method well described.

Japie
Those eyes, and it looks like he has the bread in his bill too! Lovely action, nevermind the OOF wings etc. this one rocks, well done. Got your mil glad you came right. eill look later.

Wow, this sure is one animated bird, Japie. Great posing (love the leg "hanging down"), and wonderful dynamic effect from the strong motion blur in the wings. Outstanding colors, very delightful catch.

I think this is about as sharp as it gets in the circumstances. You nailed the head, and with just 1/200 you're bound to get a lot of motion blur on the wings anyway.

Very dynamic, very well done!Japie!A great original shot in birds categories, with high attraction for watching it,also in a great way you composed her,in a fine moment, well freezed, full of real colors & beautiful,You did great,Japie!
Sincerely
Mohammad

super prise en vol...du tres grand travail...les couleurs et le rendu de l'action est tout bon...belle réalisation...amicalement BI

Japie, this is one those 'once if a lifetime' shots; a bird flying directly towards the camera, and I think it is rather splendid. You did extremely well with a speed of only 200. Have you tried 1000. It is useful for moving objects.

Fantastic photo!!!! I love it! The bird must be blinded by flash after awhile! It does not need to be sharper, the bird is in motion!

This is incredible, so well catched in action. Not too sharp is not a problem, as the bird looks flying fast, slaloming between the vegetation. On the contrary, it conveys the impression of speed and nervous movements. Head and eyes show very well the determination to get the food, and, that also makes this shot very attractive. Congratulations!

Wow! wondefull!! Action at his best. No, it's not very sharp but...what a photo!!! Two tumbs up.
Bravo!
p/s: all your photos are good and more ***

Thanks for visiting mine.

Hello Japie,

Put your helmet of. How can someone of our TN members have now comment on you, after so many attempts!!. And then this as result. You have to say to them : "Try it by yourself" --
A nice compo and very nice colors. I'm sorry to say this: I have no idea to get this shot better or sharper. Regards and TFS Bob

Dear Japie,
I had been watching your captures with great interest and was thinking how sharp you must be in your reflexes! I adore your work. Keep it up. Cheers: Subhash Ranjan

Nice shot! As you said, though quality wise it is not among the best,.. but the subject, composition and type of shot make up for that! The sharply focussed eyes looking at the viewer is amazing. But I feel the background is quite distracting. I think it will look even better if you wash out the background by clone and smudge tool (in adobe photoshop CS3). ANyways, great work.
