The African Lion (Panthera leo)

I think enough has been said on the African Lion on this site in scientific terms. I will not bore you with all of that once again.

I took this picture a few kilometres north of Satara in Kruger. It was almost midday, in overcast conditions.

Now this was a coward lion. I must ashamedly admit that my better half sometimes helps me out when I take pictures by making odd sounds to attract attention so that the animal will look into the camera. She happens to have the ability to perfectly imitate a tomcat in heat! :-)

She started doing that imitation, and this young male did not like it at all. Can you see how worried he is looking at us? He looked at us for a few seconds, and then took off in the opposite direction as if he had seen a ghost. He ran flat-out; it was like watching a cartoon. We could not help laughing.

Bonjour,
Sympathique portrait de ce lion qui ne semble guère effrayé par le photographe.
Bonne journée.

Hello Jane, this is a smashing portrait of the young Lion. He does look curious as he looks into your lens. You made and excellent exosure and caught good light on the eyes. Very well focused and nice and sharp. Lovely composition.

Hi Jan,
A great portrait by its pose, texture, exposure and background and visual contact. Excellent crop too.

Hi Jan,

I love your notes and your lion portrait. The eyes are amazing - his expression is wonderful. You show the textures of his coat and face so well. Beautiful face with fine details. Marvelous shades in the colors and a nice natural setting.

Jane

Hi Jan Hendrik,
'I think she really likes you...'I wrote but afterwards I read your note, saying it is actually a 'he'.
Satara...just a minute..I take my map..
Okay, here we are:-)
Serious...a very beautiful photo; especially the 'matching' yellowish colours are natural and moody.
Only nit is your wife; she deserves better....:-)
Congrats

Well at least he ran in the opposite direction. It is great subject and close crop. I think the workshops added some more impact to the image.

Hello Jan
I love lions as I love all felines, and this one is so cute! I couldn't help laughing at your explanation on that worried look and eye-contact.
It really had to be funny.
A magnificent, sharp and most beautiful picture!
Congratulations and thank you very much for sharing.
Greetings
Maite
