Pied Kingfisher (Ceryle rudis)

This picture was taken in the Kruger National Park.
A large, black and white Kingfisher. Size 25-29cm A bit larger than a Laughing Dove. Afr: Bontvisvanger

As with other Kingfishers, the bill is long, straight and dagger like. It is blackish in colour - as are the eyes. The feet and legs are black.

The Pied Kingfisher is virtually all black and white. The upper-parts are blackish with a pattern of white markings, which give it a scaled and barred look.

The underparts are white, and the male has a double breast band , the upper one of which is much broader than the lower, narrow one. The female has just one broad band across the chest.

The Pied Kingfisher is a common and obvious bird of any waterside habitat. It is found on the seashore, on lagoons, lakes, dams, rivers and wetlands. It usually occurs in pairs, or small groups. It is either seen perched on a prominent spot, or hovering above the water. This is the only species of Kingfisher, which regularly hovers above water. It will hover until a target comes into sight and then suddenly plunge headlong into the water.

The Pied Kingfisher eats fish, insects and crabs.

This species makes a range of high-pitched twitters and squeaks. A common call is a sharp kwik-kwik-kwik-kwik

The Pied Kingfisher nests mainly from August to November. The nest is inside a tunnel, excavated in a vertical earthen bank. The tunnel is excavated by the birds, and is usually just longer than a metre.

Hello Jan Hendrik,
This is a superb capture of this beautiful bird that looks a bit (in its colors) as the Down Woodpecker :) Details’, composition and POV are superb! I also like this brilliance in its eye, BG and this beautiful pose. Thanks,
Claudine

Hi Jan-Hendrik,
I guess I don't have to go to Kruger National Park any more:-)

Hi Jan

Another splendid shot from you!
I really like the simple composition that you've created here as well as the crispy clear details you managed to get from this lovely pied kingfisher.
The spot where you found it is simply magnificent and it gave you no distracting elements in the shot as well as a superb and contrasting BG.
Charming work!

Congratulation to this great photo! It is just perfect in many ways. The pose of the kingfisher, the calm BG, the sharpness and details.

How were you able to get this close, I have not heard of any permanent hides in the Kruger park, so I guess you took this from a car or something... right? Where in the park?

Thanks for sharing this amazing photo?

Hello Jan-Hendrik,
Excellent portrait of a Pied Kingfisher with superb sharpness and BG and fine lighting. A little more space to the left of the bird would make this perfect, but it is a great capture anyway.

Hello Jan Hendrik,
Very fine capture of this Pied Kingfisher in a very nice pose. It's probably the least colourful of Kingfishers but it's the only one I've been able to observe for any length of time and I love it! I like your composition and details are very sharp and colours excellent.
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi Jan Hendrik,

What a lovely image. I like the way the head feathers are sticking up. Nice catchlight too. Lovely to view. :-)

Bonjour,
A voir la branche, il ne doit guère peser ce petit oiseau !
Bonne journée.

A pleasure to go back to this wonderful picture of a Pied Kighfisher, Jan.
We are generally attuned to seeing this species of birds with bright colours. However, this almost black and white Kighfisher you shot in Kruger Park has its own unique elegance and appeal.
The image is beautifully composed.
Thanks for sharing it and best regards.

Hello Jan Hendrik,

WOW!!! What a fantastic picture describing a wonderful bird!!! You did a remarkable composition and managed excellently the exposition (which is really not easy with black and white!). The great bg compliments so well the bird too! Here in Quebec, kingfisher are very shy and difficult to approach.. Is it the same in South Africa???

Great pic and TFS,

Michel (who is very impressed!!!)
