The eland (taurotragus oryx) is the largest African antelope and bulls can attain a mass of 900 kg, although the average is around 700 kg; females are some 200 kg lighter. Both sexes have horns, those of the males being heavier than those of the females. Coat colour is fawn or rufous-brown but with age some hair is lost and the old bulls have a blue-grey colouration.
Although they are predominantly browsers, eland will take fresh grass; they use their horns to twist and break off the higher branches of shrubs and small trees. If water is available they will drink regularly, but during droughts or in naturally arid environments such as the Kalahari they can obtain their moisture requirements from their food.
Eland populations can be sedentary or migratory. Those in Botswana's central Kalahari region migrate for considerable distances in search of food and water. Despite their size they are excellent jumpers and can clear two-metre fences with ease. |

Hello Peter,
Looking in your gallery I came across this fine shot of a pair of Eland. This is sharp and taken from a good POV in nice lighting and presented in a pleasing composition showing a little of the natural habitat.
TFS and have a nice weekend!
