| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
We get occasional snow here in Clarens. Not deep, but enough to turn everything into a wonderland. Of course the birds have a tough time.
After a night of snowfall, this fiscal shrike managed to uncover some suet.
The Fiscal Shrike Lanius collaris belongs to the Family Laniidae. These small to medium-sized birds have medium to very long tails. The plummage of the southern African species is predominantly grey, black and white. The bills are short, stout and hooked, and the feet are strong and sharp-clawed. The birds are found in semi-desert,
woodland and savanna.
The Fiscal Shrike is usually seen singly, perched on a prominent bush or post from which he drops to the ground to catch his prey. He impales the prey on thorns, barbed wire or sharp twigs; this behaviour gave rise to to the bird's colloquial name, 'jackie hangman'. An opportunist, it takes doves, small birds, insects, frogs, lizards and small snakes.
It calls from a perch, a melodious whistled song, and a harsh 'ghree, ghree, ghree' alarm call, and it mimics other bird calls.

Oh MY ! This poor baby does look chilly indeed
superb composition, though I think a little increased contrast or a levels adjustment might have been better.
