[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Paper wasp
Belonogaster junceus

They are medium to large wasps (body 19-37mm) with red brown log narrow waists. Theri wings are dark brown. Overwintering females sometimes congregate in large numbers in sheltered spots. This is precisely where I found the nest. Underneath the roof of my house in the courtyard where I do not frequent often. I have included a photo of the nest if you are interested. The B. dubia looks just like this species but does not have the yellow markings.

I was so dedicated to get this shot as they hatched taht I took chances that only a stupid "photographer" would take. It was just after sunset and the hive was calm. Do not try this at home! :)

All lenses focus closer as you "extend" the optics away from the sensor. The total amount of magnification depends on the focal lenght of the lens + the amount of extension you add, divided by the focal lenght used. In other words: I used a 68mm extension on a 100mm focal lenght. That gives me 168mm/100mm = 1.68X magnification. Most macro lenses do not go over 1X magnification. Hope you find it interesting as I do. Canon has a specialized lens that can magnify 5X. To get this with my lens I would have to add 400mm of extension between the sensor and the lens. :) Imagine the loss of light and the small DOF.

Wow, what an amazing shot. Details are fantastic. These extension tubes sound exciting. I must do some research. Good shot Gerhard but I suggest you invest in a safety harness!
