The Willem Pretorius Game Reserve:
Allemanskraal is Dutch/Afrikaans for "Every One's Fold" (or Pen) is situated 150km north of Bloemfontein and 255km south of Johannesburg, right in the heart of the Free State with the Allemanskraal Dam (with a surface area of 2 771) forming the central part. Allemanskraal is an irrigation dam built in the Sand River in 1960 to supply water to the Free State Gold Fields.
The reserve itself covers some 12 005ha. This reserve qualifies as one of the top birding spots in the Free State. The reserve checklist totals about 250 species, of which about 200 are common or regularly seen. It also has a great variety of game, but that is not the only draw card for tourists.
On the northern side of the dam there is a range of hillocks, surprisingly bushy for the Free State. On the summit of one of these hillocks, Doringberg, there are relics of about 7'000 stone huts built by Iron age people, probably ancestors of the Leghoya or Taung tribe. These people built extremely small huts, cattle kraals and walls – all from stone, but without mortar. The size of the huts was possibly dictated by the difficulty of roofing with slabs of stone. Each hut can accommodate only a single person, who would have had to sit, and not lie down to fit.
Taken late afternoon, cropped slightly to 800x600 format, USM [300,07,0], +10 contrast and -10 brightness, resized and framed.
All crits and comments welcome and I hope you like the shot. Thanks. Tim |

Its a lovely shot, Tim. Great compopsition and colours. Exposure is spot on. Rotate the photo a bit to get the horizon level. Very well done. Your quality is improving very fast.
I very much like the "feel" of this photo. It gives me a sense of being in the field and looking over the view. (Or perhaps that is just wishful thinking). Excellent detail, lighting and color. Well done, Tim, thank you.
