Whilst on a walk I came across a large clump of arum lilies growing in some marshy field. There were loads of bees humming about. Botany was meeting Zoology and it called for some pictures. Note the pollen sac on the leg of the bee.
Arum lilies Zantedeschia aethiopica can grow up to 1.5 m in the shade. They love marshy areas and are very hardy and can resist frost and snow. They are widespread from sealevel to mountains, often found in large communities.
The leaves are soft and the stems spongy. Male and female flowers are clustered on a central yellow spadix. The spathe is cream-white up to 200mm long.
Honey bees Apis mellifera Family Apidae are social creatures and their structure consists of a queen, workers and drones.
The legs are modified to collect pollen. They nest in holes and construct wax combs with cells for larvae and honey. It is a well-known fact that bees convey information amongst each other by performing intricate dances.
Technical: Shot with my little Canon Powershot A700 in macro mode. Resized and sharpened JPEG for upload. |

Hello Irmgard,
You really have found your 'forte' here! This is an excellent capture! The sharpness and detail are superb! Excellent light making the bee's wings shiny and creating deep shadows in the lily! Well done!
kind regards,
Bev :-)
