around 16:00
I think it was either on the S95 or the S62, leaving the gravel road to get closer to the river; driving leftwards around a a tree and some bush to get back on the gravel road; my car went 'down' to the left with a big 'bang' hitting the ground; my 400 mm with MarkIII always laying on the seat to the left ended upon my 5D and 70-200mm.
I thought 'end of the road , finished, you really did it now, etc.':-)
I thought about my cell phone as I saw no other options. The chance was great no other car should drive on this road in the following 100 minutes or so. And then it is dark and camp gates are closed.
Getting out of the car to get help was no option.
Thus...cell phone!
But first I started the engine, this was okay. Put the gear in reverse and to my surprise the Toyota pulled out...??!
Convinced the car was seriously damaged I drove at a very low speed to the nearby bridge where you could get out of your car in the demarcated zone.
Got out of the car and checked. I detected no damage at all, 'carosserie' wise.....
Nevertheless I saw 'oil' on the tarred road.
Decided to try to reach the camp and I did. Asked at the service station to check my car. They send me to the mechanic. I drove the car on the 'bridge'.
We saw where the car had hit the ground but no damage and the 'oil' seemed to be water from the air conditioning which was normal:-). I gave my black friendly friend a big tip and our high five was convinced....
Camera equipment seems to be okay as well(I guess...)
Further on a lot of smileys for Toyota Corolla!

In fact the above story has nothing to do with photography. However...
And I did publish it anyway 'cause I found something 'strange' about this image. And it has nothing to do with post processing or so. It is about 'perception'....
I really wonder if you see it too...???

Although the term tree squirrel can refer to any arboreal member of the family Sciuridae, it is generally in reference to the common and widely distributed members of the genus Sciurus and close kin, the tribe Sciurini. These genera contain most of the common, bushy-tailed squirrels in North America, Europe, temperate Asia, and South America. The tree squirrels are close relatives of the flying squirrels.

Unlike ground squirrels, tree squirrels have not been proven to transmit diseases to humans. They generally spend little time on the ground, preferring the heights of the forest canopy.

Hello Annick,
you brought back a really nice collection of wildlife pictures from South Africa. The squirrel is shown with superb sharpness and looks through a well-designed empty space into nowhere. Besides the technical quality of the picture I appreciate the general composition.

Enjoying the story! Image is very clear, shot in beautiful light with tons of detail. Was the strange thing, that you are referring too, what you can see at the tip of the squirrels tail, what looks like claws?

Even before I read your fine notes, I thought -- this fellow is a bit overendowed -- possibly even enough to make movement difficult -- or am I simply misreading the image? (No I suffer from no frustrations, thank you)

I can't help myself...i just love your series too much...screw work :)
The story is very nice and from it's beginning i knew it would have a happy end :) I applaud the Corolla!
However, the thing you said at the end puzzled me...hmm...now i have to take an even longer look at the picture...
This is indeed a great shot and the pose of the squirrle is amazing! Firstly, the head is positioned exactly behind that peace of tree bark that stands out in the BG. Then, the shape of the tail forms an interesting angle - which makes the two segments of the tail parallel with the structures of the bark. Even its fingers create a interesting shape near those torn parts of the tree.
...but i still feel that i've missed that "perception" thing you were talking about.
Anyway...i can't stay too long, so i must only add that it's a splendid shot, one with an impreccable focus and, as Steve said, an outstanding bokeh in the BG.

Hi Annick,
This is a very nice looking squirrel. You have seen and captured this little fellow very well. You have made me very curious about the 'perception' with your note.
Maybe it is my imagination but to me it looks like in the bg between the brown parts on the left there is a lioness. But I can be completly wrong so looking forward to the answer tomorrow.

Wonderful shot! Amazing animal - this squirrel looks strange for me, because I've never seen such squirrels. Great composition, detail and sharp is better then very good.

Hi Annick, you are sure getting some great shot in Africa, your notes are great. It is very interesting to see a Squirrel from this region, they are not too dissimilar to the Grey Squirrel. This one is beautifully caught as if he is about to leap. As usual with your work, it is crisp and sharp and very well composed. Good light and colours with excellent pov and dof. Is this chap a little over endowed in the nether regions?
