Warthog - Phacochoerus africanus

A pig is a pig and will always remain a pig. Even if the pig is a hog (as in this case) there is nothing that anybody can do to alter the behaviour or characteristics of these animals. When it sees a mud pool there is only one thing on its mind and that is to leap straight in, wallow in the mud, and with unconditional abandonment get smeared with as much of the gooey dirt as possible. You can take a pig and treat it in a proper spa bath, give it a fancy hairdo, spray it with fragrant perfume, and then tie a lovely bow around its neck, but the moment you release it and it sees a mud bath, it would hit a b-line and dive straight in without a second thought or a moments consideration. As cute as it might have appeared, just moments before, once again it would be up to its ears in mud…just being a PIG again.

Ok, these little piglets were not treated at some Beauty Spa, but they seemed to be nice and clean when they appeared on the scene. It was amazingly hilarious to see how they "switched on" the moment they caught a glimpse of the pool and the mud. Jumping up and down, throwing their heads into the air, running around in circles, nudging each other, spinning around on the spot, and finally taking the old mud dive. Besides the fact that Anna and I were hosing ourselves I could hear the shouts of delight and abounding laughter (especially from the moms and the kids) going up from all the other vehicles that was also parked at the spot. Actually it didn't take long before the behaviour of the little piglets rubbed off onto mum and she was just as much enjoying the mushy mud in unrestrained childlike fashion. This was photographed near noon at the Jones dam, half way between the Skukuza rest camp and the Tshokwane picnic site on a very hot and sunny day.

Parenthetically this made me ponder about the upcoming celebrations of saying "goodbye" to the Old Year 2007 that almost ran to its final conclusion and "welcoming" the New Year of 2008. So many times we see the same ritual as I've described above. People go to extreme lengths to prepare for the "Old Years/New Years" bash – take a bath, do their hair, put on some sweet-scented perfume, and dawn their nice-nice attires, only to go and "Pig Out" at the party and hardly remember how they finished off the Old Year or entered into the New Year.

Sorry, I don't want to sound like a party pooper, but I just want to call on all you beautiful people to enjoy this year's celebrations responsibly and in that way take care that each and every one of you are still around next year. Yeah, so just like it says on the liquor bottles nowadays – Always Enjoy Responsibly, with the first letter of each word capitalised for a very specific reason.

Always. That means: be consistent. Maybe there is a history that needs to be accounted for, because perhaps you know that you are one of those who are inclined to go overboard with this stuff. That means that possibly you have already learned the lessons, but due to a short memory tend to forget it every time.

Enjoy. That means: there's a fine, pleasurable line between enjoyment and terror. Enjoyment is when you're engaged and having a good time. Terror lies just beyond that, when the enjoyment is gone and all that's left is the uncontrollable ride from which one cannot get off.

Responsibly. That means: Watch Out, because what's coming up next is gonna knock you on your back side. It means that the wild careening at the end of a long downhill drop is going to have some dire consequences. It means that someone – maybe you – will end up paralysed with bitterness and pain. But enough of that though. Fortunately there are many other ways to enjoy whatever party, without having to resort to irresponsible revelling.

So, with this, I would like to wish you all a Wonderful New Year.
May all you creators of these amazing images on TrekNature,
continue to be a source of enjoyment to all of us,
and also a source of pride.
I wish that the year 2008 find you all in good health,
full of joy and abundant happiness,
and that it will pour faith and hope in all your hearts.

Enjoy God's creation and live life to the full.

My warmest and most sincere regards.
Loot

Your words are superb and very meaning full, everything in moderation. Your image is splendid, the characters doing what they love and between your note and image I can almost see the glee with which they wallow. Loot,
Great shot of hogs doing what they love! I think we could all learn something from their behavior and enjoy the little things in life that we sometimes take for granted.... It obviously doesn't take much to make them happy.
Have a Happy New Year!

Hi Loot,
Wow! A great family scene. My mom was never really thrilled when I played in the mud. Here mom is right in there with them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Warthogs are as ugly as it gets, but you gotta admit those babies are kinda cute. Excellent capture here.
Have a great 2008,

Hello Loot,

Somehow this picture of yours eluded my notice. I loved the wise note you wrote. To enjoy responsibly and to introspect at every step as to WHAT we are doing with our lives is VERY IMPORTANT. One could hardly agree more with you on this.

A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO AND YOUR LOVED ONES. Hope to see Loot post great pics the coming year and as often :-).

Warm regards,

Hello Loot
Aaah, once again the master story teller at his superb best. You know how to take your personal observations and thoughts and weave it into an interesting and gripping chronicle and for good measure even include a moral message at the same time. A well captured composition showing this family of hogs going through one of their most enjoyed daily past times - mud diving.
A prosperous and happy 2008 for you and Anna as well.

Bonjour Loot, what a wild scene !! Babies Warthok seems so enjoy in this mud bath!! Congratulations and happy new year my freind, with a lot of splendid shots from you , Didier.

Hello Loot,
Due to a lack of time I often miss some pigs, I mean pics.
For instance this 'moody blues'. I don't know about you but often I wanted to join the 'party' viewing such or similar scenery in Kruger; talking about bathing elephants, cleaning baboons, fighting impala, fishing crocodiles, yawning hippos,...
I was really privileged to observe and photographed all these animals but still...I was in a car, in a cage almost...:-).
In that observed world there are no moral rules to get crazy about and it does make more sense in a way...
But let's talk about your great image; you managed to get everything sharp through an outstanding DOF; an amazing big aperture though.
I do like the compo. There's two times a triangle to detect; the three little pigs in the left corner and another one through the big warthog, the small warthogto the right and once again the three little warthogs, now functioning as one point.
Very good work, Loot.
Happy 2008!
Annick

Dear Loot,
what a perfectly fitting cute and charming presentation for the time of the year - filled with cheerful energy, light and high spirits! Think Pig: Most shop windows are filled with rosy little pigs made of sugar in Vienna, Innsbruck, Salzburg these days - considered to be a symbol of luck by the hardly explored savage tribes of Austria.
Loot, all my best wishes to you and your family - Happy New Year!

Happy 2008, my friend!
What a cute family of warthogs!
The little ones seem to be in their glee, playing in the mud. The muddier, the better.
Mom does not have eyes to see the mess, though I assume it probably does not faze her nearly as much as it would a human mom. : )
Those are faces that only a mom can love!
You really caught excellent eye contact with two of the two babies. Sharp details and wonderful moment captured.
Thanks for your good wishes and great images through the year. Here's to many more!!!

Hello Loot and Happy New Year.

Hello Loot !
You have captured a wonderful family scene here ! They seem to really enjoy their mud bath ! :-) Sharpness, details, colors, composition, POV, poses of the young hogs, everything is excelent here, like on all your other pictures. You are really an important part of TN with your wonderful work, and I really hope we'll see many more pictures from you with this new year.

Hello Loot

Is hierdie morsige varkies nie te kostelik vir woorde nie? Dit lyk egter of mamma vark net so lekker smerig as haar werpsel is.
Doet so voort.

Groete
Rehanna

Dear Loot

What an exciting and thrilling photo! These piggy’s surely seemed to be enjoying themselves tremendously and having fun, fun and once again fun. Are they family of your Miss Piggy? You know the one you always mention in your postings? Ha-ha, luckily I know that Anna has a sense of humour and that is way I can joke about it. This picture surely was a delight to look at and like always I appreciated your storytelling and your notes.

I know it is a little late for New Years wishes, but here is mine.

Hours of happy times with friends and family
Abundant time for relaxation
Prosperity
Plenty of love when you need it the most
Youthful excitement at life’s simple pleasures

Nights of restful slumber (you know - don’t' worry be happy)
Everything you need
Wishing you love and light

Years and years of good health
Enjoyment and mirth
Angels to watch over you
Rembrances of a happy years!

Thanks for sharing this delightful series of baby animals. All of them up to now have been so adorable and charming, and I enjoyed every single moment of it, as I am sure many others as envied your photographic skills in their silence.

Warmest regards.
Aaltjie

Hi Loot

Hallo Loot
I asked you pretty please not to place this photo of me and the children, but you could not resist the temptation could you? Now it is water under the bridge and everybody can see what is Miss Piggy’s favourite pastime. This a lovely photo with clear details of me and the children. If I knew you were going to photograph us, I would at least posed and turned my backside away from the camera and showed you my beautiful and unusual tusks and comb the bristles on my back. I would even have lifted my tuft and waved it like a tiny flag. At least 2 of the boys are posing for you. Thanks again for reminding me of this muddy and fun filled day and sharing this special moment with fellow members on Trek Nature. It was lovely to relive the occasion.
Kind regards
