Tree Velvet Spider (Gandanameno echinatus)

Family: Eresidae

The spider shows various hues of dark-brown, yellowish brown to grey, abdomen sometimes with distinct patterns formed by white, orange or red setae. It’s carapace is rectangular, high or slightly flattened, usually densely clothed with hair, fovea circular but variable in depth. It has 8 eyes, median eyes close together, lateral eyes wide apart and posterior lateral eyes usually positioned far back on the carapace.

It’s abdomen is rounded to oval and densely clothed with hairs, frequently with patterns. The legs are short and stout with dense hairs, tarsi usually joined to metatarsi by almost rigid joints.

It belongs to the signal-web spinners, also known as a retreat web, is not a true "web" but has trip lines, extending from the retreat of the spider, that are used to signal to the inhabitant of the retreat that prey is approaching or within catching range. This web is commonly made by spiders having a cribellum.
The threads are usually not sticky and only serve as signal lines and not as catch lines.

The spiders use their legs and chelicerae to overpower their prey, or use silk from their spinnerets to cover the prey. Trip lines are usually used by the more primitive weavers as a hunting strategy.

They are usually found in the bark of Acacia trees. They are tree-sit-and-wait spiders.

In this instance I found it in the bark of the Acacia tree in my garden were I captured the Long Horned Beetle. I hope we can spend the summer together and that I can still get a couple of shots of it.

The composition is very nice, the colours are fine, sharpnes is good with an exelent note, great job

Good Morning Gerhard! Very interesting spider & surrounding natural environment. This background gives good contrast to a dark subject helping to bring out its detail I think. Thanks for the interesting note also..P.S. I used my old trusty maglight again (Halloween in September)as I've not yet purchased any external lighting. In any case this light produced the desired effect!

Oh Lordy! How big is it? The mouthparts are huge! Great picture Gerhard and I know how much you love spiders so you must be proud. Well done. Great note as usual.

This seems to be a very very close macro, and the details are wonderful. Beautiful creture, nice shot.
