Ground Hornbill
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
This hornbill seemed to be scanning the bush above for signs of any insects or bugs to add to its diet.
The Ground-hornbills (Bucorvinae) are a subfamily of the hornbill family Bucerotidae, with a single genus Bucorvus and two extant species:
Abyssinian Ground-hornbill Bucorvus abyssinicus (also known as Northern Ground-hornbill)
Southern Ground-hornbill Bucorvus leadbeateri
They are endemic to sub-Saharan Africa - the Abyssinian Ground-hornbill being found in a belt from Senegal east to Ethiopia, with Southern Ground-hornbill occurring in the south and east of the continent. This photo is of the Southern Ground-hornbill and was taken in the Kruger National Park.
Ground hornbills are large, with adults around a metre tall. Both species are ground-dwelling, unlike other hornbills. They feed off live prey. They can be very long-lived. |

Hallo Mike
Stunning capture. Impressive and most colourful bird. The colour of this specific one is very bright and eye catching. We have seen a few of these during our recent trip to the Kruger Park. I just admire these birds eyelashes, and looks like false whimpers. On this photo it is not so clear, but I think you know what I am talking about, because I am sure you have seen bird very close- by. The green of the grass and trees bring out the wonderful red of this bird to its full potential.
Thanks for sharing.
Kind regards
Anna

Why I see the red green blue and black so it is due to this bird, TFS.
