[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Mankwe Dam at Pilanesberg needs no introduction for long time TN’eres, as Japie has featured some very nice Pied Kingfishers on the wing, taken from this selfsame hide. Pilanesberg Nature Reserve is situate in an ancient, extinct volcano, with Mankwe Dam being about in the centre of this area. This is Big Five country, with the bonus that it is malaria free and also, Lost City and Sun City, the original Casino Palaces in SA, are on it border.

This is one of the best places in SA to see rhino up close and very personal. It also features a lot of birdlife, the favourite subject of yours truly, here.

There were maybe 6 of these Pied Kingfishers in attendance, some of them still being fed by the adults. This guy and two of his cronies were perching on some stumps in the water below the hide. He started regurgitating, and I managed to shoot about five shots of him doing this act from start to finish. Here, the undigested pallet has just been discarded from his throat and it is still visible on the right side of his bill. Taking action photographs of birds are a great adrenaline rush – it is not the having – it is the getting, that make photography such an intense enjoyment for me. This action is so fast, that you will miss it with the naked eye. Even I, who was shooting the sequence, only saw the pallet once the pictures were downloaded on my PC.

I like it Callie,
Prachtig man, Ik zou er ook wel eens 1 zo op de foto willen zetten, maar ze zijn mij veel te snel. Mooie snelle foto, prachtig in beeld gebracht, bedankt,
gr. Jaap

Wooooow, Callie! I see here picture of big, red tongue with small B&W bird attached to it ;-) What a funny pose :-) I guess that this bird must be cute. Great post!

Hi Callie!!!
Great bird in funny moment!
I like your piscures with a sense of humour ;-)

Hi Callie, not an easy shot, but it must be thrilling to follow the sequences here. Harsh sunlight is perceptible here as it increases the contrast a lot. To me the action caught is the important point of this very interesting shot, so I agree 100% with you when you write "it is not the having – it is the getting" that counts. Sure you had pleasure by watching this!

Hello Callie.
The composition is nice. The colours also.
But the sharpness could be better.

Hello Callie,
A great capture you have here, its amazing the things we sometimes see when we download the images at home, but didnt notice at the time of shooting.
An interesting note too.
Good work,very well done.

Hello Callie, Well I agree, YUK! Great moment captured. Never seen anything quite like it. I enjoyed your note, a great post - Thanx!!

Very nice picture, my friend.
You're right about the "getting". It's on my wish list to get a Kingfisher, we have only one species of kingfisher here in Sweden and I can see it sometims but I never get close enough to get a decent shot.:-(
Nice colours and good compostion,
Well done.

Hee Callie,

Het is goed om jou alweer te zien posten! Heerlijk! This is a nice photo, especially since those birds are so fast! I would love to capture one myself, but before the sit down, they fly off again. TFS! En laat ze komen!
Lekker aand!!

Regards,
Pieter
