Hi everyone - Greetingd from A Dhabi. Another posting from my recent trip to South Africa. I rather loked the early morning light on this herd of zebra - and focussed on these two.

Zebras are odd-toed ungulates of the Equidae family native to eastern, southern and southwestern Africa. They are best known for their distinctive white and black stripes, which come in different patterns unique to each individual. They are generally social animals and can be seen in small harems to large herds.

Zebras are generally 2.3 m (8ft) long, stand 1.25-1.5 m (4-5ft) at the shoulder, and weigh around 300kg (660 lbs), although some can grow to more than 410 kg (900 lbs). In addition to their stripes, zebras have erect, mohawk-like manes. Unlike their closest relatives, horses and donkeys, zebras have not been truly domesticated. There are three species of zebra: the Plains Zebra, Grevy's Zebra and the Mountain Zebra. They can be found in a variety of habitats, such as grasslands, savannas, woodlands, thorny scrublands, mountains and coastal hills.

The name "zebra" comes from the Old Portuguese word zevra which means "wild ass". The pronunciation (in IPA) is (ZEB-ra) internationally, or (ZEE-bra) in North America.

Hi James,
so are they white with black stripes or vice versa??
Great moment you caught here, very good expousre in the white and perfect DOF, well done.
Paul

Hi James, focusing in on these two worked well. I like the stare the lead Zee-bra is giving us, but I also like how you caught that eye on its mate. The detail you have is excellent. I don't think I've ever seen their noses so close before, it looks like a softer texture than a horse even. Very nice shot.

Thanks, John

Nice trip...nice photo...What's that old Hollywood saying "Location,. location, location"...it helps to be where these creatures exist...and it more than likely helps not to have been living there for too long as it jades ones viewpoint...depending..and with exception..Very well seen sir James!
