[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
White Rhinoceros / Ceratotherium simum

This photograph was also taken at the Kwamalibala waterhole, where we spend most of the 1st day when we recently visited the uMkhuze Game Reserve. We admired nature for as far as we could see from the inside of the hide, and observed the distinct ways particular animals would behave when they came to the waterhole to have a drink or to cool off.

Once again I could have given you the details of the physical description of the gigantic rhinoceros, but I am sure you will find plenty of that kind of information on Trek Nature. My chosen topic for my note is about the conservation of these beautiful animals.

Conservation & Protection

The word rhinoceros is derived from Greek, meaning nose horn, which is their most distinctive feature. The white rhinoceros derives its scientific name, Ceratotherium simum from the Greek cerato, meaning horn, thorium, meaning wild beast and simum meaning flat nosed.

Both the white and black rhinoceros are flagship taxon for biodiversity loss in Africa. When biodiversity is lost there are enormous consequences for humanity from both the bio-ethical standpoint and economic losses. In developing countries important social and economic opportunities are lost when flora and fauna resources disappear.

By 1895, the white rhinoceros was considered extinct throughout its African range; however there was a small population of 20-50 animals that was still living in the Umfolozi region of South Africa. Rhino populations were decimated by uncontrolled hunting and poaching during the colonial period and second to that was the destruction of habitat for farming and settlements. Farmers considered all rhinos as pests that needed to be eliminated. What are some of the reasons for the dramatic decline in white rhino populations?

Hunting
Uncontrolled and wasteful big game hunting took a heavy toll on all the rhino populations during the colonial period throughout Africa. White rhinos were already decimated when Theodore Roosevelt went to Africa, with porters and professional hunters in the early 1900's, to collect specimens for museums in the United States. They killed over 500 animals and shipped their heads and skins home. Soon after, the Prince of Wales went on an extensive hunting safari to Africa, which popularised safari hunting even more. Safari hunting became the rage throughout Africa.

Horn
Rhino horn was used as early as 618 A.D. to make ornamental drinking cups in China.The cups were used in Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian cultures from Central Africa to China. There were many other things that were carved from rhino horns, such as bowls, spoons, and brush pots for artists, the handles of canes, boxes, and jewellery. The 1800's were a major export period for rhino horn and items can still be found in various antique shops throughout Europe's major cities.

Dagger Handles
A dagger with a carved handle is worn by all men and boys over 11 years of age in Yemen and in a number of the other Gulf Countries. It carries the greatest cultural significance and is a sign of great prestige. When carved it has an amber translucency that improves with handling, developing a special patina over time, unlike other materials that deteriorate with age. It is this quality that has kept rhino horn on the top of the most wanted list. The most skilled carvers of rhino horn are in Yemen. 5 Handles can be carved from ±2kg of horn. During the 1970's almost 40% of all rhino horn on the world market was imported to Northern Yemen.

The government of Yemen tried unsuccessfully to halt the trade in rhino horn beginning in 1982. It wasn't until Yemen eventually signed on as a party to CITES in 1997, saying it was against the will of Islam, to kill rhinos for dagger handles, that things changed dramatically. Today, most carved handles are made from cheaper alternative materials such as water buffalo horn.

Medicine
It is important to note that contrary to Western belief, rhino horn is not used as an aphrodisiac. It did find limited use as such in Northern India, but today because of bans and the high price, demand is down.

The most significant threat today is posed by the use of rhino horn in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) in China, Taiwan and South Korea. Its main use in TCM is as a severe fever reducer and for headaches. In a survey taken in 1993 of TCM practitioners, 60% stocked horn. Mostly it is the horn that is used, but also blood, urine, bones and dung have been utilised.

There is no record of the rhino being used in any way for medicinal purposes anywhere in Africa.

ENDANGERED STATUS: CITES
Appendix 1, Lower Risk: near threatened
(Note: The Northern subspecies of the white rhino is critically endangered.)

The South African government, in particular the Natal Parks Board and concerned citizens, wasted no time in establishing an immediate severe conservation program, (Operation Rhino) to save the white rhino from extinction in the early 1900's. Today it still stands, as probably the world's most successful conservation effort to succeed. There are an estimated 11,600 southern white rhinos living in private protected sanctuaries, conservancies, rhino conservation areas and in National Parks where effective law enforcement can take place. There are another ±770 living in captivity in zoos and parks around the world.

It has been critical to develop and maintain effective field protection of both black and white rhino populations. Involving local communities in the conservation efforts has also had a positive impact. For example, the tourists that visit the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Reserve in South Africa (where the remnant population was found in 1895), pay a community levy that goes directly to the local Zululand people. The reserve allows the local people to harvest limited amounts of natural grasses and they encourage the villagers to grow and sell their fruits and vegetables to the Reserves restaurant. The villagers also sell their crafts to visitors. As a result of this arrangement between the reserve and local people, there is a positive reason for villagers to want rhinos and other wildlife protected. Source

My criteria for a good photo is when it makes me feel as if I am actually there, viewing the rhinos from the other side of the waterhole. Makes me want to pack my car and head for any one of our great National Parks.

The Rhinos are totally relaxed and having a leisurely time. I can see two scavenging birds also on one of the Rhinos' back.

Wonderful photo of those gigantic rhinoceruses! They are very rare in Tanzania, but in South Africa there are many, I have been told. So these are the "white" ones, those with wide mouths. And the ones in Tanzania and Kenya are called the "black" ones, with not so wide mouths.
I sure enjoy looking at your amazing photo! (Did not have any digital camera when I visited South Africa, so I simply have to go back, at least once more, and not only for the camera reason!)

At some point I remember looking at that camera. Sony was the first to come out using the Zeiss(?) lens..and I knew it had a good reputation. I see they still use it. So in a good zoom quality it is as good as a DSLR...well to me...I am not much of an elitist. The only reason I use DSLR is becuase it is what I have used for so many years.
The reality of size in these creatures is amazing. Back a year ago I was 312US Pounds which is by me....rather large...I can somehow relate to the size and girth of these creatures. Now I appreciate it even more as I weigh in at 224...having done much diet and excersise...but that is something these creatures need not worry about.

It certainly is sharp. I see you say you were in a blind. Is there a rig nearby as well? amazing place to visit...and perhaps nice to live nearby but I think it might be old for me after a bit unless I was born and raised there...A very good quality image Anna!

Great image. Those animals look extremely powerful but beautiful at the same time. It is a pity that humans usually cause such negative impact on wildlife. Your note is very useful and interesting.
BTW, does the left side rhino have two birds sitting on it ? That would be a nice bonus to an already great looking photograph. Great work.

Hello Anna,
It must be fabulous to observe these rare animals in their natural surrounding. You even had the chance to see two of them, which you photographed in a very natural way. One of them having even two birds on the back. I have seen lately a rhino in a zoo and I really felt sorry for him. Thanks also for the interesting note.

It is so amazing to see these photos of the rhinos in the wild. We have White Rhinos at our local zoo Anna, and they are safe and soundly tucked away from contact with us. But to see them out where they belong must be so exciting. .
Well taken image - I don't think they are even know you are there.

The white rhino is a very endangered species,and this double delight is an awesome capture, Anna.I love the entire composition, you've not blurred out things like I thought good photographers do, and I'd set out to try and emulate them, earlier(now I have a different perspective).The entire environment in this shot is beautiful, very well captured.

Another amazing animals you showing us here. What a stunning sharpness and details of them. Good composition of them facing opposite direction, with the beautiful backdrop and water hole at the front. I was mesmorized by them when I saw them in Lake Nakuru in kenya. As big as they are they move very gracefully and are just so much fun to watch. Sometimes it seem they are fighting but merely just being playful with each other. Obviously I would really wanto to disturb them or agitate them in anyway. Great to keep a distance observing any wildlife so we don't disturb thier natural way of life. Thanks again, Anna.

Hello Anna,
A marvellous capture taken from a great POV to show the White Rhinoceros mother and calf placed in a fine position in this composition. The waterhole FG is nicely counterbalanced by the BG of Acacia and the sharpness is of such a quality that a pair of Red-billed Ox-peckers are easily discernable on the mother's back - a nice little bonus to this excellent image.

who needs safari when we have such great images like this?! For most of us a once in a lifetime experience and you really made the most of it. Superb detail, very well exposed and perfectly placed in the frame - great notes too, like so many other creatures, i hope that the Rhino's future is assured.

Hi Anna,
A really nice cpature of the pair of white rhinos.I like the way you have framed them in opposite directions and dont they look quite splendid. The one on the right seem to be a bit aware of the activities across the bank and has lifted its head creating eye contact with the lens.The focus is good with good DoF.

Hello Anna, this is another animal that I have only seen in the zoo, and it is just not the same. It is good to see these two Rhinos at the watering hole, free like this. Your capture includes their environment which I appreciate, especially for animals such as these, so we get a real feel for how they live. The pose of the two of them is a good one, you've composed it very well. I don't know how much post processing you do but this shot is tack sharp, with excellent detail, and very natural looking colour. Your note is excellent.

It was almost one of those photographs where one animal looks to have a head at each end!

Please give me the opportunity to congratulate you on a job well done. I must be getting rather old as I have missed out on this lovely scenery with this two great looking rhinos. Looking at these huge animals makes me miss out on the times when we visited the reserves and zoos while living in South Africa.
I hope you have noticed that I approched this critique with proffesionality and maybe that why you won't realise that I have not been at this photo to leave a mark or two. Maybe if you think this are a gentleman writing this and not a "Kaaskop" I'll be left of the hook for time being.

They look like something from a distant past, and I guess that is what they are too as some animals don't have to change so much to adapt and survive...
A fine capture in their natural habitat, showing this typical behaviour with sharp fine details!

Ja/nee kyk, groen is die land van Natal. Ander dele van die land toon al tekens van die winter hier vroeg in April en die gras begin al plek, plek vergeel, maar hier is dit nog (eh, wel) 'gras' groen. Jy maak my nou egter so verlang na die Mkuze wildtuin met hierdie foto. Ek sal moet 'n plan maak en manlief se arm draai op een of ander slinkse wyse en sorg dat ons vir 'n naweek ten minste bietjie weer daar gaan kuier. Petrol raak egter nou so duur dat ek wonder of hy vir die grap sal val, maar waar daar 'n wil is, is daar 'n weg.

Hierdie skoot met die twee renosters is klasiek. Dit lyk of hulle vir 'n oomlik gevries het sodat jy hierdie foto kon neem. Jy bewys met die Sony kamera dat jy nie net goggatjies kan afneem nie en die groot gedoentes kan maar kom want jy is reg vir hulle. 'n Mooi skerp foto met pratige kleure en komposisie.

Hi Anna

Ha, ha, ha, these two fatties were real show-off's. Remember how they came to the water hole with that big brave demonstration making sure the other animals knew they have "arrived" and sort of taking over the proceedings at the rendezvous. But it only took the arrival of a flock of tiny Bee-eaters that suddenly appeared out of nowhere. In their hordes they "attacked" the water with such verve and energy flying to and fro while loudly chirping all the time, which made the rhinos so nervous or frustrated that they hastily made a retreat. That was when I tried my best to capture a couple of in-flight shots of those rapid flying and agile gregarious little passerines, but they were just too fast and abrupt for me and I must say working through the limiting viewing slot in the side of the hide didn't help much either.

Anyway, this is a lovely shot of the two braves – and we figured out that it probably were a mom and a juvenile from ±2 years previously. She must have been ready to accept a male again and we saw the big old man close by when we approached the hide. He sort of made us look over our shoulders a couple of time while we were walking along the open area footpath leading toward the hide. The pose and the moment of capture were very good. Your eye is tuning fast to see a good composition.

I absolutely love the rhino! I know they are endangered and I feel for them. These are terrific - how do you manage to get these types of photos?

Your notes are amazing and informative. I love the framing and composition. And to think it wasn't staged - perfection is often a matter of being in the right place at the right time!
