While visiting Etosha National Park in Namibia I took this photo. Now I am not a birder and I am unable to identify this bird, must be one of the kestrels? Perhaps someone can help?
There is an out of focus twig in front of the bird that I hope is not too distracting. At least the focal point of the photo, the eyes, are sharp. |

Hello Peter,
The branch is a bit distracting otherwise a good image; for example I do like the light. Beautiful raptor. Don't know about the ID. Maybe a juvenile...

Hi Peter & welcome to TN.
Beautiful bird of prey.
I like your composition, the POV, and birds pose. Nice colors, details, DOF, and exposure.
I did a WS to try and improve it, hope you don't mind.
Well done & TFS!

Peter:
Greater Kestrel Falco rupiculoides. I am not a great fan of this "looking up its skirts" point of view, but it is often the only possibility to get any photograph at all. Your shot is nicely exposed and shows the plumage characteristics and the pale eye well, although I am not so certain that the sharp plane of focus is actually on the head?
Regards, Nigel.

Peter,
The detail and sharpness of the subject are great. The twig is not too much of a distraction for me as I understand the difficulty with foliage and birds. The POV, DOF, BG and clear BG are all great.
TFS,
Sheriff
P.S. I think it is a Greater Kestrel. One finds a few of them In the Kalahari normally.
