Golden Plusia
Trichoplusia orichalcea

The ID is also very confusing. My book states it as a Golden Plusia (T.orichalcea) but the internet search came up with the scientific name of Polychrysia moneta for the Golden Plusia. The Golden Plusia featured on the net does not look like this moth. A search for the scientific name turned up the following common names but none had photos so that I could confirm it.

Also known as: Cabbage semi-lopper, Cereal Moth.

Hope someone can help me in this regard.

The moth is a remarkable noctuid, for it flies days and nights. Most noctuids do what their name suggests: they sleep during the day, well hidden in plants or on trees. Even though the Golden Plusia looks a rather dull Moth, close-ups reveal its actual beauty!

Some sources say that the insects travel to Europe in great numbers, mainly from Africa. In none of its stages it can survive Central-European winters. Noctuids often have one or more 'humps' on the back and all have impressive faces up front.

The resources for this critter is rather limited and given the fact that I doubt the ID of this critter even though I ID’d it from my book makes this note less complete. Sorry about that but I wanted to share this beauty and mabe get some help on the ID.

Hello Grehard!
Looks like an exhibit in museum ;-)))
Very interesting photo and very well done!

Excellent capture Gerhard! Fantastic DOF at F/32. Very sharp and detailed with the iridescence of the wing picked-up very well. I like it, Great work!

What excellent camouflage this moth has - looks just like a dead leaf. Very good catch Gerhard. It has pretty colours too, and for me to say that is good. I used to be terrified of moths as a child. Even now I'm not happy with them. So, good job!

Hmmmm. Gerhard, not one of your better ones in my opinion. I have to agree with Joanna, it does look like a museum piece. And the severe side on angle doesn't give us any perspective of depth or build of the moth. The POV is OK, but the angle just doesn't do anything for me this time, sorry.

Great shot Gerhard! Was there a nuclear test when you got this? I ask as I'm wondering how much light you must have had to get this with F32 @ 1/200 and extension tubes!

Super details and a good composition, the gold on the wing is very nice. I'm sorry I can't help with the ID.

Very good capture Gerhard,
The detail is superb, as are the colours and lighting.
Thanks for posting

Love the golden tone in this shot. Looks like this moth is taking a bow. Excellent details. Very sharp, with good light. Another nice shot. Thanks

Hi there :) did a quick search on the site i gave you, and this is what i got :

Thysanoplusia orichalcea (Fabricius, 1775)
Slender Burnished Brass

There wasnt a Trichoplusia orichalcea

Great capture with excellent sharpness and DOF, good POV. A small pity you can't see the eye properly, but otherwise no nits.
If our similar ones are anything to go by, you were lucky to get this chap as separated from the bg as this. Ours usually sit in the thick of the plants, often head down pretending to be a dead leaf ;-))
