[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The name wildebeest finds its origin in the Dutch and Afrikaans words wild and beest, which mean "wild animal" and "beest" in Afrikaans means "cattle" (or "steer"). Although the name is derived from the Dutch language, the name "wildebeest" doesn't officially exist in the Dutch language; the Dutch name for wildebeest is gnoe (where the Dutch "g" is pronounced [x], as in loch).

Afrikaners (Afrikaans-speaking South Africans) may have started using the name wildebeest for the animal as they had no other name for it when it was first encountered. "Gnu" is from a Khoikhoi language (which pronounced the [g]), likely an imitation of the grunting noise that a wildebeest makes.

Hi Annick
great note to go with this shot, thanks. Excellent DOF and details too, nice inclusion of the tree in the BG. Well done as ever...

Annick

A powerful shot, it almost feels like it will charge through my screen !. The wind that is blowing the bottom whiskers adds to the ruggedness of the shot.

Hallo Annick,
Komt goed.
Groeten en ook een goede week gewenst,
Peter

Hi Annick

Very good pose and great detail - the overcast conditions helped reveal detail in this shot.

Hello Annick,
Great POV and excellent composition that includes the OOF tree in the BG in this frontal presentation of the Gnu (the Swedish name and alternative Eng. name).
Superb sharpness and contrast with the BG.
TFS,
Have a good week,
Ivan

Hello Annick,

This is a very fine photo of the wildebeest! You have used DOF in a very good way keeping the animal sharp and bulrying the background. Despite animals dark color all details can be well observed as the image is rasorsharp.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Annick,

Very good image of this "blou wildebees" as distinct from the "swart wildebees" of Natal which is blacker and has heavier shoulders and fore quarters. The subject stands out well from the background and is exceptionally sharp. It is very difficult to get a highlight in the eye of this animal.
Good composition with the tree and the space around the animal.

Annick, This looks like painting. The monotones, dry tree and seemingly under-fed Wildebeest all add together. Great shot. If the rest of the environment was similar, you could have added more of the environment.
