wiki

The Water Thick-knee (Burhinus vermiculatus) is a species of bird in the Burhinidae family. It is found in Angola, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The Stone-curlews or Thick-knees are a group of largely tropical birds,in the family Burhinidae. Despite the group being classed as waders, most species have a preference for arid or semi-arid habitats. They are found worldwide within the tropical zone, with some species also breeding in temperate Europe and Australia.
They are medium to large birds with strong black or yellow black bills, large yellow eyes—which give them a reptilian appearance—and cryptic plumage. The names Thick-knee and Stone-curlew are both in common use, the preference among authorities for one term or the other varying from year to year. The term Stone-curlew owes its origin to the broad similarities with true curlews (which are not closely related). Thick-knee refers to the prominent joints in the long yellow or greenish legs and apparently originated with a name coined in 1776 for B. oedicnemus, the Thick-kneed Bustard.
They are largely nocturnal, particularly when singing their loud wailing songs, which are reminiscent of true curlews.
The diet consists mainly of insects and other invertebrates. Larger species will also take lizards and even small mammals.
Most species are sedentary, but the Stone Curlew is a summer migrant in the temperate European part of its range, wintering in Africa.

Thank you for looking:-)

Thanks for the warning although I think the chances of me using the term in Dutch conversation are pretty remote!! : )

This is a nice sharp frame filling image, Annick. Nice work, again.

very interesting species. once this bird existed in my country but I think it was extincted. If i remember well i have read that this bird is a night bird. maybe thats why it have such huge eyes.

Nick..

Hello Annick,

Thank you for the warning!

This is an excellent capture of a bird which is completely new to me. Your focus is sharp and the the plummage details are fine. I can see why it is called a 'thick-knee'!
You have a good dof to isolate it from its b/g.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo Annick,
Grote klasse! Ben jaloers.
Groet,
Peter

nice sharp portrait, greetings Ori

What a funny lookng bird Annick.
It has such a large head and eye for its little body.
The plumage has really interesting patterns and textures.
Your image is very sharp, well exposed and composed.
Another good one.
Cheers
Steve

(ps .... It was amusing to see that someone (banaei nikon) had copied, and pasted in as his own, your critique on the Superb Starling photo by Peter van Zoest (PeterZ)
"Hi Peter,
TFS"

Nearly all 'his' critiques are copied and pasted critiques of other peoples, and many don't even relate to the photo he has 'critiqued'.
Very naughty,but I had to laugh ;)

Hello Annick,
what a nice capture for lovely Water thick-knee, very similar B. oedicnemus here. Great focus and eyes contact. Nicely composed in natural biotop. Cropping and presentation also great. Thanks for sharing, best wishes
Ahmet

Hi Annick,
Excellent capture of Water Thick-knee with good pose, POV and composition, pin sharp details and excellent lighting.

Another new & interesting bird you bring us Annick..
The color, exposure, and details look great, good eye contact.

And the next time I'm in Holland I'll remember to use the term "water dikkop" with caution. Thanx for the heads-up :)
Howard

Hello Annick,

You have made a nice portret of this, unknown to me, bird. The bird, sharply shown, stays very nice aginst the blurry background. Plumage pattern is very well shown amd due to the soft light many color tones have been rendered.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Annick, beautiful bird with fantastic details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Annick

What a cute capture of this Water thick-knee!
I really love the timing of your capture here - catching it with it's beak opened like that as if it would have seen something amazing at the time :))
Seriously now, the quality of the shot is excellent and the details and close-up level that the Water thick-knee is presented with are terrific.
Spot-on DOF and exposure, too.

Bravo and TFS
Horia

Nice catch. I liked your timing and the pose you captured. Well done.
Best wishes,
Achim

A "textbook" presentation of an interesting looking (seeing it for the first time) wading bird in perfect focus and exposure, displaying a great amount of plumage and colouration detail Annick, surely the work of an expert my friend. TFS this indeed!
Mehmet

Hi Annick

Fine shot of this african thick-knee. Looks like he's telling you where you should put your camera :)
Excellent composition, great sharpness and plumage detail.

Hi Annick

I can imagine how "water dikkop" could get you in the hot water with some Dutch people (chuckle). Never thought of the connotation, but I had a good giggle when I read your comment.

Great capture of this Thick-knee. They are rather comical looking birds with those extra large eyes and disproportionate large head. I think the rainy conditions and the soft light actually assisted you here with a lovely result. Maybe you could have left a little more space in front of the bird though. The bit of green at the bottom makes for a nice splash of colour to brighten up the muddy soil.

Well done MF and TFS
Warm regards
Loot

I like the wetness to it :-)

By the way, how are you finding CS4? Is it a worthy upgrade from CS3?

All the best,

Hi Annick

You always take such charming photos. I love the open beak caught here and the large bright eye. The DOF is perfect with a sharp bird, lovely ground details but with an OOF background to help the bird stand out. Perfectly caught

Annick,

A very well composed pic that shows good detail of the subject. The sharpness and clarity of the image are good. I also like your POV.
Is this Lake Panic by any chance?
