[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This rather large White Rhino male was maintaining a stiff pace to catch up to its mate and calf (He was fairly close and I had to pan to keep up with him). I managed to get a couple of shots off before realizing that our vehicle was directly between him and the family. We did make a rather quick retreat as this is was not a good position to be in. I posted the Mother and calf in one of my earlier postings.

Some vital statistics(also posted previously)

Southern white rhino

Characteristics: The largest of all rhinoceros species, the southern white rhino weighs around 3500kg. They are distinguished by a large shoulder hump and squared lip. Rhinos have thick gray skin which forms inflexible plates over the shoulders, haunches, sides, forehead and cheeks. Rhinos are surprisingly agile, despite their bulky appearance. Their long, heavy head is carried close to the ground. Rhinos have poor eyesight and depend heavily upon their hearing and sense of smell.

Diet: Unlike other rhino species, white rhinoceros are exclusively grazers. Other rhinos are browsers that feed on trees, branches and shrubs. White rhinos possess squared lips that allow them to feed on short grasses.

Reproduction: Females typically give birth to one calf that weighs around 85kg’s. Calves stay with their mothers for 2-3 years.

Environmental Connections: Thanks to successful conservation strategies, the southern white rhinoceros population is improving in the wild. Unfortunately other species such as the black rhino and the northern white rhino population are in severe danger of extinction.

Japie, Now that's one horny animal! ;-) Great shot of a magnificent beast on the move. And the size of those nostrils. You can almost imagine the great snorts of air as it shakes the earth in this "sprint". The safari continues...

Mejor no contrariarlo... siempre conviene tenerlo de amigo... jejeje.
Buena captura... atractiva composicion de color entre el fondo y el animal.Las texturas de la piel y los cuernos es realmente interesante.

Better not to oppose it... always it agrees to have it of friend... jejeje.
Good capture... attractive composition of color between the bottom and animal.
The textures of the skin and the horns is really interesting.

I love it, we can see the details of the skin an the horn.
I love the color.

Verynice portrate shot, they are amazingly fast, not seen one in life but wild life programs show them well.
This is very nicely light and the red of his last dust bath shows well, there are a few more details to be had on the top of the head from between the ears with shadows and highlight but not enough to be really bothered about.Nice one Japie.

Hi Japie,

I can imagine that it must be really impressive to meet such an animal in the wild. The problem with them is that you can't really calculate their next action. Wonderful colors and texture in your shot. Very well done.

Beautiful colours for a great potrait.
The light help with textures. Thanks!

Beau portrait pour ce poids lourd ! Jolies couleurs chaudes et belles textures.
Well done !

Nice image, Japie. Yes, I agree with you -- I would have moved my vehicle as well!! One does not argue with these chaps - they are big and bad tempered.

I like this very much Japie. This image has great impact. I find these animals fascinating to say the lease. Great capture.

Excellent titre Japie.
