Common Waterbuck
Kobus ellipsiprymnus ellipsiprymnus

Two sub species are recognized, the Common and the Defassa waterbuck. (K. ellipsiprymnus defassa) They have similar build and form but differ in pelage coloring and markings. Most sub-species are distinguished by its distribution though. The Defassa Waterbuck is restricted almost entirely to the west of the Great Rift Valley. The Common Waterbuck occurs east of the Valley. Overlapping occurs in Kenya, Tanzania and parts of Zambia.

It is a large antelope species and belongs to the family Reduncinae which it shares with the Kob, Puku, Lechwe and Reedbuck. It weighs 270kg and is 2,7m in length. Average horn length are 77cm with records of up to 1m recorded.

Both races are still abundant with the largest concentration in Lake Nakuru NP in Kenya. There are more than 150 000 animals in that park alone.

Befitting its name they are always associated with water, preferring areas with reed beds or tall grass as well as woodlands. Open grassland adjacent to cover is usually utilized for grazing. (the water was just to the left of the photo and the woodland can be seen in the BG)

I tried something different with the composition and felt like creating a sense of space, showing more of the natural surroundings and less of a “textbook” photo. I would appreciate your comments regarding the composition a lot.

Hope you like the father and son photo.

I love dad and son Gerhard! And the composition is superb. Showing the BG like this with the 2 waterbuck in the front corner is excellently composed and it also gives us more understanding of what it is really like. The guys stand out well, nice and sharp, and I love their inquisitive looks. Well shown, thank you.

Hi Gerhard

This is a brilliant composition. It gives a good insight to their habitat. They have the perfect pose. Both are very alert and well aware of your presence. I love the dark end of the snout shaped like a heart! Tecnically a perfect shot. Thanks for another lovely image that is a pleasure to view!

The compostion is GREAT, it truely is a nature scene. Great Note as well.

The waterbucks are beautiful, and so proud-looking. What a handsome couple. The details are very sharp, and I particularly enjoy the composition with the blurred green trees at the top. Most people would have been tempted to crop lower, closer to the animals. But the "tall" crop gives your shot such a wonderful sense of the waterbucks' domain.
Ooh, I just saw your note.
Well I agree. Your composition is certainly very successful.
Congratulations and TFS. : )

Hi Gerhard. Splendid photo, perfect composition. Very good colors.
Robert.

Hi Gerhard,
An excellent composition. I really like the space you have given them at the top showing how vast the land is. The light appears to have been soft, rendering the colors very beautiful. The detail and DOF are perfect for this shot. Great Job!
Scott

Gerhard, a nice capture. Composition is great and good colours too. A good one, very well done.

Excellent work Gerhard! This tall frame really does the job here of showing the near subjects and their more distant habitat..I like the overall effect, a very creative composition. Well done.

This is sooo beautiful Gerhard. I admire your sence of composition. I love to see-feel the surroundings of those animals in this photo. I can not be sure but it looks as if the contrast is a bit much. What do you say?
Very well done.

A very professional result. DOF just right and the gaze of the animals make a successful picture +++ Ian

Hello Gerhard,
I very much like your composition showing space and environment of the animals. Colors are wonderful. Pose of the animals are very nice. Good details. TFS!
Helene

Excellent capture Gerhard. I love the low pov adding a wonderful depth to the picture - very interesting composition. Wonderful, warm colours and spot on focus. The bucks look very alert but not afraid. Very pleasant picture to look at. I think it would be great in oversize, framed on a wall.

Excellent work, Gerhard. Thank you.

"The greatest thing that I've learned is that it doesn't matter whether you love me.
It does matter that I love you.
Once I got that through my thick skull, it was wondrous.
I just walk around with the joy of loving you.
I don't expect you to love me back.
That's wonderful -- no more expectations of "payback."
Sylvia Browne (Excerpted from "It's Your Karma")

I just came back from a wonderfull trip I made in full Nature. No electricity, no news, no TN. I thought of you some times, not always. I am full of gratitude towards Life by writing these little words.
Best regards,

Your friend,

Luc

Magnificent. LOVE the composition with the portrait orientation. I think I need to start saving for a new lens and a safari holiday!

Excellent composition Gerhard and really sharp details. What I like best is the eye-contact. How many seconds after you pressed the shutterbutton did they run? :) It must be great to live in Africa! Well done & TFS!

Pieter
