Kelp Gull
(Larus Dominicanus)

Also known as: Dominican gull

The Kelp gull is the only gull commonly seen in Antarctica, where they occupy the coasts and islands of the Antarctic Peninsula throughout the year. They are widely scattered through the southern hemisphere, almost to the equator. They are large, white-headed gulls, with a straight yellow bill, and are experts at swooping down to pluck food from the surface of the water. Kelp gulls eat amphibians, birds, fish, molluscs, reptiles, worms, and even small mammals. However, their main food is the Antarctic limpet (NACELLA CONCINNA). Breeding starts in late November, when the eggs are incubated for 28 days. The eggs tend to hatch from mid-December to late January. The Kelp gull also breeds in southern Africa, Australasia and South America.

This is a very daring post for me. I normally tend to shy away from white subjects because of the OE risk. I would appreciate your input regarding this photo and the exposure a lot. Any recommendations to correct this or how to improve my chances would be appreciated.

I am still on vacation at the coast and really enjoy the new subjects. My 300D died on me on the first day and I had to get a new body or go home. So I decided to get the 20D and what an improvement. It is a lovely camera and the AI servo makes in-flights much easier than with the 300D.

I will catch up with the critiques when I get back home and don’t need to pay a internet café for their usage.

It is deluxe now : Canon 20D ! The first shot very good. Beautiful white. The beak has a strange shape. The litle feather on it is nice. Thanks for sharing and good vacation Gerhard.

Wow, looks like another 300D is dead ;-) [ask Janice]. 20D is in good hand now. Great start with new cam Gerhard! Exposure is perfect, same as colours and details. I hope you're enjoying your holidays.

Great picture, Gerhard.

Hi Gert, wonderful shot of the gull. And the whites are perfect. Stunning portrait, he looks quite regal up there against the blue sky. Our Black-back Gulls have that red mark on their beaks too. Good job.
My Canon died 3 weeks ago (6 months old) and in is the Canon workshop! I have been told NOTHING about it yet. I'm just waiting patiently to hear from them...

Great capture Gerhard,
Very busy few days for me, so I'm afraid a short visit!!
No time to read notes, but enough time to enjoy your post.Well worth a big green smile.
Thanks for posting, have a good weekend

I have bought a 20D today also, I'll be trying it out at the A1 Grand Prix tomorrow.

Hi Gerhard,
A really nice shot from your hand. I like the proud portrait of the gull. Rasor sharp and a good POV. The bird is very nicely contrasting against the sky. Nothing wrong with it. Good job!
Regards, Ruud

Hello Gerhard, I hope you are well. I'm snowed under with work right now so sorry I haven't been in touch.

Great shot here, I really like the POV it gives the bird a stately feel. Maybe the whites are a little too bright in places but it's always a tough one with gulls.

Nice to see the 20D in your hands :-)

Excellent work.

Gerhard, an excellent detailed capture of this animal. Nicely composed and with great colours. Great note too, very well done.

Hi Gerhard
Nice sharp portrait. Lovely yellow beak. What's that sitting on it ? Well framed accentuating the curves.
Enjoy the rest of your holiday.
Regards Toni

Hi Gerhard

So you have joined the 20D club... Congrats on the new 'toy'! My husband bought me a 20D for my birthday but it was absolute rubbish. Had so many problems he had to return it. Just awaiting the replacement. I like this shot alot. The POV gives nice detail of the large beak. Nice catchlight in the eye. Clear and sharp. Perfect exposure. Nice work. Thanks. :-)

Unusual but refreshing post from you, Gerhard.
The white seems a bit red on my screen. Probably the pervading lighting.
Confratulations for your new toy.
I am not capable of recommending you whatever it is as regards the settings required for your camera.
It is a bird with a big imposing presence, this gull.
Have a spectacular vacation at the coast, friend.
Thank you.

Hello my friend. Sorry to hear your 300D went south but glad to know you made the right choice in your new camera ;-) I generally use center-weighted average for the most part..Of course, you know already to use spot metering with high subject/BG brightness differences...Great exposure here. I'm sure you'll come back with some great shots..Stay Well,
Howard
