Cape Gannet
Morus capensis

Also known as: AFR: Witmalgas, GER: Kaptölpel, FRE: Fou du Cap.

“capense/capensis” is derived from modern Latin meaning “of the Cape”. “morus” is Greek for stupid or dull.

Most birds breed well spread out. The Cape Gannet breeds close together. Most colony birds bring nesting material to the site. They space their nests so that neighbors can not steal their material. These Gannets makes their nests of Guano. (Bird droppings) This can not be stolen. So with nothing to loose the birds nests close together.

Gannets are very aggressive when it comes to intruders in their nests. Even the females get bitten at times. To reduce aggression and the danger of fights they have developed quite a special set of signal behaviors.

They bow to show that they own this site. They use bill scissoring and mutual preening to reduce tension between partners. To let neighbors know they are moving off the nesting site they skypoint.

In this clutter of nests they find it very easy to find their own nest. The Gannets have developed a accurate aerial impression of the site and the whereabouts of their nest. They make sure every one knows they are returning to the nest before they land. First they circle close to the ground and give their distinctive identity call. The others recognize this call, then the circle the site a couple of times before landing.

This particular site at Lambertbay and host about 17,000 birds. The weather was overcast and I had to go home early because of a light rainfall later on. I took a lot of photos at this site and will post some more info on this species later on. Hope you like it. Alas my vacation is over and it’s off to the “saltmines” on Tuesday.

Hi Gerhard,

Excellent shot and well done on the composition. I like the POV and the flock on ground. The three in flight adds perspective to the image, excellent work.

Mike

Ek's terug.... en ek sien jy was besig terwyl ek weg was! :-)

Great photo. I really like the way you framed it. The birds looking up at those flying above is a great touch.

(By the way, ons het jou die naweek gemis by die reunie...)

Nice intro to this group of Gannets, glad your hols went well and that the retun to the salt mine is not too arduous.
The ones in flight are very well captured against the dull cloudy sky the ones on the ground look a little bright in the whites on the laptop screen. though the the capture of the behaviour is priceless well captured TFS yours Robert

Very interesting shot, Gerhard. We don't have gannets in California, so to me they are very exotic. And to see so many of them in one spot must be quite an experience. The composition of this picture is wonderful, and the birds are in sharp focus. Great job and TFS. : )

No, I won't call you stupid, Gerhard.
What a wonderful composition and POV. The birds flying overhead are placed so strategically - good job there. I and like how you have captured the birds below at the edge of their breeding colony. A perfect scene, well done.

It's a excellent shot, Gerhard.
It's nice to see a post from you again, missed you.
Very well exposed, nice colours and good details.
I like the light too.
Great work, my friend

Hello Gerhard

Great shot. I like the in-flight, but most of all the Gannets on the ground look up to see the new in-bound arrivals. The BG compliments the image nicely. Perfect exposure. How do you like the new toy?

Great shot, Ger ! It would be intersting to even do a panoramic shot and crop most of the horizont out...

Hi Gerhard,
Amazing catch!
Great timing, excellent colour and details, Well composed.
Very nice shot!

Great pic ! I'm planning to go the re on October 15th, will they still be there ? Ori

Wow ! What an unusual composition. Interesting to see the crowd on ground and the 3 birds in flight. Thanks for sharing Gerhard

Nice, almost artistic, shot Gerhard. Very smooth, detailed and love the composition with the flying birds having space to move above the standing birds.

Hi Gerhard, nice to see you again!

Very nice picture, looks like crowded airport :-) Excellent exposition with good details on grey sky - this kind of sky almost always looks OE but not in your photo. By the way - in Polish these birds are also called 'Stupid'.

Hello Gerhard!
Wonderful capture.Clear details, moment you caught,POV,DOF,sharpness and composition are excellent.
TFS..:-)

I could tell you this a very good photo, but I'm sure you already know this yourself ;-). The think I like the most in it are the 3 gannets that are looking at the two flying overhead. Well caught scenery Gerhard!

Hi Gerhard,

Another great shot! I agree with Henrye that the upwards looking bird are a great touch. The overflying birds are of course the best. Composition is very good and details are sharp. TFS!

Hi Gerhard.
What a theatrical shot with the ones in the air, some of the the others looking up. All so sharp. I really like the yellow heads contrasted against the grey sky. Would just have cropped out the half yellow heads on the left.
Regards Toni
