White Rhinocerus (Ceratotherium simum) Witrenoster

This is a large animal weighing in at 2000 -2300kg (Male) and 1400 - 1600kg (Female). Elongated head with two horns on the snout. Mouth is square and wide. They have poor vision but compensate with excellent sense of hearing and smell. They are short tempered and must not be messed with!
Habits: Live in small groups consisting of a territorial bull and female with calf. Territorial bull sprays urine and defecates in "latrines"along boundries.
Habitat: Wooded grass plains and marshes.
Food: Grass - especilly short grass. Drinks water when available.

This image was taken in the Krugersdorp Private Game Reserve. No, this rhino was NOT begging forr a bone - they go down on their haunches before lying down. Quite a mission to rest those tired feet.

Shooting Data: Nikon D70. Sigma 170-500 set at 440mm. ISO: 250.
A: f6.3. S: 1/800.
Bean bag used.
Postprocessing done with Coral Photopaint.

Although this rhino is going to rest, he seems to stand up before starting to run. It gives your shot an incredible impression of power. Very well captured in action, with great natural colors. I appreciate the neutral background and environment, putting this rhino even more in evidence.

The sharpness is great. I like this setiing and the note/image combo is excellent.

Thanks for posting

He looks sleepy, nice horn. Good composition and pleasing to see a different pose for this animal. The sharpness is good and you've cropped the image just right.

Ben, Very nice shot of this mammoth. Hey, you even left room for that horn! Wise move! As I stated in Gerhards post, I look forward to the day when I can "zoom" with the rest of you big boys!! Great supporting note & well done!

Informative note and a great shot Mr. Broughton. "Bean bag used."? For the camera, I presume...

The sharpness and the mood of the rhino is what makes me like this capture very much. It is now part of my favourites

The exposure is perfect, nice details and a great composition. Fabulous shot.

Looks a bit like me on a Monday morning (smile) I love the shot Lourens, detail and color working together to make a brilliant photo...well done!

Beautiful shot, the textures are lovely and the DOF excellent. The brown tones of the skin make it look very natural, I feel I am there. Good work.
