Greetings all. I have just returned from my trip to South Africa. I have had a great time there I saw so much wonderful wildlife and I met many nice people too. I must say thanks to Japie his wife Phylis (spelling?) and their children; Japie and Natasha, I must also say thanks to Gerhard and his wife Charmaine for all thier hospitality. I would also like to say hello to the lovely Odette; another member of this TN community whom I had the pleasure of meeting. I musn't forget Callie who joined me on a afternoon of photographing birds. Thanks everyone!

This is a Cheetah, I took this shot at a Cheetah conservation project that myself, Mr and Mrs Gerhard and Odette visited on saturday. It was a magical day, I was allowed in the enclosure to sit with the 5 young adult Cheetahs, I had one laying on my lap I stroked others and recieved plenty of purrs and licks. The licking is a little bit painful as their tongues have the texture of very rough sandpaper. It was a very special day for me, one that I'll never forget.

The project is run by Pieter and Estelle, they are very busy raising 7 Cheetah cubs right now. They have to be fed every two hours at this stage and we were lucky enough to see these little ones too.

I hope you like this picture, I have a few more to post from my trip which you will see in the next few weeks.

I need to get to bed now - I've had no sleep on the 11 hour flight back and it's dark, cold and gloomy here in London.

PS. When viewing this shot stand a few paces back from the monitor, it looks a little better like that.

What a wonderful story of your trip! How incredible that you actually got to see friends from TN in person. 'Tis a small world indeed. : )
Great shot of this cheetah. How many people can say they have been that close to this magnificent animal?
Congratulations and thanks for sharing. : )
Welcome back. : )

Hey, Paul's back from SA!! And reading your notes you had a great time. What a super trip Paul for you ...
And your cheetah is lovely; it's a good shot showing us just how close you got to him. Yes, the eyes look sad or worried, the frown comes from the shape of his hairs that seem to give that impression. Great sharpness, well done.
Sleep well...

love the cheetah shot and the eyes for me in the big cats are magical...especially the lion
cheetah should be in the big 5...perhaps the big 6...they hunt mainly in the day and alone and need sighting mounds to search out prey.
being the fastest mammal in the world over short distances it is a marvel to watch the pure strength in those very light bodies unleashed
they need to eat their kill quickly as the hyena and buzzard do not respect them and will take a kill from them
they usually hunt smaller game such as the deer and buck types and need the speed for this

Lucky, lucky, lucky man! You got to see Africa, wildlife and TN friends! Jealous! I can understand why you strated with "SAD EYES" cant blame you! Back in UK...

Good to have you back Paul :)
I'm glad you had a great time and can't wait to see other shots.
This one is superb. I love this kind of tight framing, it always looks interesting. Great colours and details too.
I like it very much.
VERY WELL DONE & TFS

Hi Paul,
What a superb closeup. Outstanding detail in this shot. It looks great from any distance on my monitor. I love extreme tight cropped shots like this.

Hi Paul,
I envy you, that must have been something. A huge cat on the lap.
Excellent shot and well done on the composition, beautiful work.

This is a very nice crop. Sharp details and an intense "sadness" very well captured. It was a pleasure to spend time with you and really hope we do it again.

Take care...

Hi Paul,
Welcome back from your trip. I'm sure you have great pictures like this to show us.
This is a great close up with good DOF, nice colours and very good details. I like the POV and pose too.
Great work, my friend.

Very dramatic high-quality composition Paul. About as close as one can get! It sounds like you had a very memorable visit. Good to hear ya made it back in one piece. Ya know, all those lions and tigers and...rhinos :-}}
Very well done.

This is really a superb closeup with great colours and POV. Very well done. It was a pleasure to meet you and you must come and visit SA again!

Paul
Nice to know you are back in one piece, not too much sunburn and with lots of nice pics.
Sorry I could not make the last day, life happens to all of us.
This is a very nice picture, expressive eyes, and the colour rendered 100%
Take care
Callie

Glad you enjoyed our beautiful country. This is a sad looking pair of eyes, I must agree. Well spotted and TFS. Should we not try a section focusing on eyes, I have seen some nice eye close-ups? Nor mare smileys. Take this :)

Welcome back Paul,
What a wonderful experience you've had with the Cheetahs. Big cats are a big favorite of mine, and this shot is awesome. Wow....1 minute writing this....10 minutes looking into those big eyes (close up and from a distance as advised!!, either way a spectacular shot)
Good to have you back Paul, Thanks for posting. Enjoy the rest of the week.

You are right, Paul. It looks much better at at least 6 feet of my monitor. The visual impact is at its best.
I think you lived there an unforgetable experience, sat with Cheetahs, meeting new people and others known via TN. A dream trip! But not for you now. Enjoy ourselves now! ;-)
An excellent post under all PoV.
Many thanks. I know that your life will never be the same.

Must have missed this one at some point, though i'd have a quick browse on your photos. This ones brilliant. Well done.

Demetrio

Sad but beautiful at the same time. Very nice close up of this land speedster. The details and colors are exceptional. :)

One of the most expressive face possible for an animal! This very close-up is impressive and captured my attention for a while. This face reflex some kind of feeling or it's just a human's projection? Who knows!
TFS, José M.
PS. I read your adventure in South Africa and you make me green with envy (I copied this sentence from a dictionary:-))
