Kirby's Dropwing
Trithemis kirbyi

Also known as the "Rock Dropwing"

I still find it very hard to get close enough to these critters but Paul gave me some good pointers as I watched him have a go at it. I find it quite fascinating what we as nature photographers would endure to get the shot. This critter sat on the side of a swimming pool at a nature reserve we visited. There were no animals at the waterhole so Paul decided to shoot these critters by the the poolside. I followed suite.

He gave me quite the run around and after a while settled. I crept up to it and found out it stank!

Actually it was the dog poo lying right in front of me. Needless to say I endured it to get this shot. :)

I think this is my best Dragon so far but still not close to some of those I have seen on this site. It is also the first Macro shot taken with the new 350D that was replaced by the warranty on the old 300D.

Hope you like it.

Bonjour Gerhard!

La netteté et les couleurs sont excellentes. J'aime bien l'ombrage de l'insecte sur le sol, ceci ajoute beaucoup a cette belle composition.

Merci pour l'envoie!

Hi Gerhard, very nice. I'm wondering what PP you did to this shot as it looks a little different from what I saw when I looked at it. It's a beautiful colour and a very nice pose. Great job.

Hi Gerhard,
main detail seems to be in the wing (also the legs), and the wing with its nicely captured shadow on the floor is the main focus for me. The delicate and colourful veins in the wings come out very well, and the shadow of the vein pattern is a ver nice add-on.
Excellent!
Kind regards,
Gabi

Hola Gerhard: Wonderful, I like the shade in butterfly form. The contrast is of the best thing that one can have to capture to a beauty of these. Their eye has strange details for me. You have captured magnificent details from the head to the feet. Saludos Cordiales. *Ninfa Urania*

You said: "He gave me quite the run around and after a while settled." You are talking about Paul aren't you???? :))) I hope he didn't wear you out too much!
I think this looks awesome and what stands out most for me is the shadow of the wings. Amazing colours and sharpness too Gerhard. Well done.

This is perfect! Details and colors are incredible and the POV and composition are fantastic. I like the detail in the shadow as well. :)

you deserve a medal for this...:)
your equipment and technique are well used to get shots like this.
i cant really critique the subject or any photographic qualities as you have upheld them all to a high order and for naturalists you have provided adequate detail...some wildlife shot i have seen are photographically poor..not here but at other meetings

i have set this as my wallpaper...thanks

Never have seem so red dragonfly here. So red that such are very often poisonous in nature. Hope not this one. Excellent colors and sharpness. Good composition with shadow fit also in.

Hi Gerhard
Great macro showing off so much detail including the shadow of the wings. Stunning colours. Well contrasted and framed.

Hi Gerhard , I find some time to catch up a little with Old friends in the peace of an early morning, , Good capture of this typical darter type dragonfly with its tail held high to try and keep cool.
Good capture and keep trying, early morning canbe good when they are at their coolest = slowest and the lighting then can be spectacula.
TFS.
PS I see Callie has posted one with his new D200 I am going green at this end ;0))))

Vibrant colours, great detail and love the way in which you project the drangon fly. Great POV. Excellant pic .....
