Hello, A Happy New Year to you All!

This was taken at De Wildt whilst visiting Japie, we had a great day. We travelled around the sanctuary in a noisy diesel truck which had about five rows of seats and each time we saw something worth photographing our 500 mm lens would swing almost colliding with our fellow passengers. So there's a rule to live by: if you are on a truck and you spy someone with a big lens please don't sit next to them. Unfortunately, my pendulus lens didn't put the lady next to me off her potato chips, which she munched through the entire tour, crunch, look a cheetah, crunch, a dog, crunch, crunch, crunch :-)

Oh yes, I suppose I better say something about the picture, it's a Wild Dog, in case you haven't already noticed :-)

The African wild dog is one of the world's most social and distinctive canids. The short, wiry coat is coloured in blotches of yellow, grey, black and white that give rise to the scientific name of Lycaon pictus or ‘painted wolf-like animal' in Greek. The hair is short on the limbs and body and longer on the neck. Each dog has a unique colouration pattern, and this is used by researchers to identify individuals. The body is thin and muscular, the tail bushy with a white tip and the legs are long. Males are slightly larger than females. Unlike the other canid species there are only four, rather than five, toes on the front feet. These dogs have large rounded ears, which probably help with heat loss as well as keeping track of pack members by picking up long distance vocal signals.

I hope you like it.

Hi Paul,
I just love this picture!
I have a weakness for dogs and all creatures canines. I have seen these African painted dogs at the zoo and was attracted to their colorful markings. But this shot of the wild dog staring into the horizon truly brings out his beauty. I love the details and the light, and the intensity you have captured. Thanks for sharing this inspiring capture.

Hi Paul,
Except for the crunch, crunch...;-( it sounds like you had a great trip...;-)
The wild dog looks pretty neat. Any attempts to domesticate them by anyone?
The shot looks good!
Thanks,
Dave
Ps a Very Happy New Year to you!

Hi Paul,

An upper cut to the chip bag would have ended the crunch and the animals would have a snack. LOL

Excellent shot and well done on the composition. Beautiful tones.
Happy New Year

Mike

Pin sharp where it matters, excellent colour and light. These guys have one of the highest kills to hunts ratios amoungst the land predators...amazing animals

Happy New Year Paul.

thats a terrific shot with a 50-500 which from sigma must be the best they have made..
it reeks of true wildness and the tonality is bestial...
the flash has been handled to a tee..

Excellent capture Paul. Very sharp and clear with perfect exposure & color. He really does seem to be lookin' ahead..or movin' ahead, as he seems to be bounding forward. I need to get where the mammals are darnit. Birds & bugs are fine but after awhile..well you know :-) Thanx man & happy New Year from the Lone Star State!
