| It is hard to show the hard working dung beetle on this picture. But you can see the ball? It is made of elephant dung, and the male dung beetle is rolling it with its back feet, while the female is sitting upon it, moving, as the ball rolls. When it is ready, and it is a hard work, the female will lay her eggs in the dung ball. It is perfectly round and I was so fascinated by this sight in the Hluhluwe National Park, near Kruger Park in South Africa. Unfortunately I had no good zoom in my camera and could not leave the jeep. But one of my strongest memories from this trip are these little creatures, not the elephants, that I have seen so many times before. Already the old Egyptians considered the scarabé, which was their name of the dung beetle, as a holy animal, symbolizing eternal life. |

A belated welcome to TN. I am glad that you treasure the bugs more than the elephants. They are very nice. as said the subject is very far away but still worth posting. Thanx for sharing.
