Another post of the one male who was with 2 females near the fence.

I crouched down to take this one and he immediately started to snarl and tense up. Took the shot, then stood up again and it was clear to see him relax. The same reaction happens when a child comes close - obviously associated with easy meals!

What do you think of the close crop to emphasize the face? Appreciate your thoughts.

RAW, converted, levels and small amount of contrast, slight smart sharpen, resize and post.

I like the close crop a lot. The eyes look so intense. Great natural colours and excellent detail.

Well done

Really good "in your face" close up. (Again, good thing with the fence.)
I think it's a good croping. Gives a lot of expresion on the animal's face.

Regards, Petru

Another super sharp and classic shot

This lion is really looking nasty and hungry.
Great expression on the face!!

regards,

Zeno.

Excellent shot. Cropping this close is sometimes risky and in this case it worked well. Great focus and sharp details.

Interisting reflection in the eye. Well done and TFS

Good close up portrait Tim, great colour and detail (even the flies on his nose). Love the expression and the eyes. If that is you in the reflection, very brave shot. TFS.

Hi Tim
The interesting thing about cropping is that if you were to crop it so that it "just" showed the head it probably would have been too tight, but the moment you go past the facial boundaries it works again as now the emphasis moved to only the face, or the eyes, or the mouth, etc. This is a lovely photo with good colour, focus, exposure, and POV. Great detail in the eyes, facial hair and on the tongue.

I have a trick question for you. How many flies do you count on the nose?
Regards
Loot

Hi Tim,
I love the close crop, it doesn't always work but works very well here. I might have rotated slightly so the eyes were level, but I honestly think that's just personal preference.
