African lions (Panthera leo) live in most of sub-Saharan Africa except in desert and rainforest habitats. Lions were exterminated from South Africa and they remain only in Kruger and Kalahari Gemsbok National Parks. Lions once ranged throughout southwest Asia and north Africa. Asiatic lions (P. l. persica) belong to the single remaining subspecies in this region. Once roaming from Greece to central India, Asiatic lions persist in the Gir forest of northwest India. ("Asiatic Lion Information Center", 2001; Alden et al., 1998; Estes, 1993)

In addition to the asiatic subspecies, many taxonomists contend that there are five extant African subspecies. Each subspecies is identified by geographic region. Panthera leo senegalensis (west African or Senegalese lions), P. l. azandica (north east Congo lions), P. l. bleyenberghi (Katanga, Angolan, or south Congo lions), and P. l. krugeri (south African or Transvaal lions). Panthera leo krugeri includes Kalahari lions (sometimes denoted as P. l. verneyi). Lastly, there are East African lions (P. l. nubica). These animals have been categorized as Somali lions (P. l. somaliensis), Masai lions (P. l. massaicus), Serengeti lions (P. l. massaicus), Congo lions (P. l. hollisteri), and Abyssinian lions (P. l. roosevelti). It should be noted, however, that there is some debate as to the validity of the African subspecies classifications, leaving only the Asiatic subspecies, P. l. persica, uncontested. (O'Brien et al., 1987; Urban and West, 2002)

I didn't realise there were so many flavours!!!

I hope you like it.

Hi Paul, I like the way you have shown the side profile of the lion and the way he is watching, it really gives a sense of how big and strong this animal is. Great colours, DOF and detail as usual. TFS.
Dean.

Hi Paul!

Great POV, something new in lions' pictures I think. Desert colours of BG made good composition with animal. Pose is really good - he looks busy with his own business. African soul for sure. I didn't know that so many species of lions exist. I know only 'african' lions and P. l. persica which has got big famili in our Lodz's ZOO.

Hi Paul,
this is a great picture of the Lion.
The POV and the details are very good. Very nice DOF and colours. Is the red-brown colour-tone typical for Africa?, I have seen it in many picture.
You camera settings is like a dream for me, F8.0, 1/800sec at 200 ISO.
Great work, my friend.

fantastic picture of lion in nature with natural background. Excelent details and colours. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Paul,
An excellent composition with very good sharpness, color, detail, exposure and DOF. Very well set-apart from the blurred Bg. Very well done.

I think i'd have cloned out the grass heads and flowers, but otherwise this is as good as it gets...

What a magnificent mane, Paul. Certainly fit for a king.
I like the POV and his stare into the far beyond.
Excellent DOF, focus, and light. Really enjoyed your note as well. I didn't know there were so many subspecies of lions either. TFS. : )

those little flowers say he is just a puppy!..:)
good profile with rich tones and non fussy background...he seems to be speaking which is better than the literally stuffed shot i have been getting...
crisp and full of tone

Hello Paulo!
Excellent DOF and composition. Wonderfull colors, light and details. Brawo!
TFS;-)
regards
Dorota

Hello Paul,
This is an outstanding shot!
POV and framing couldn't have been better. They make the picture look quite exceptional and give the impression that the lion had no idea you were anywhere close. He looks very natural.
The grass and flowers in FG are the only thing that could possibly spoil the perfection of this picture though I'm not so sure it does. For me this is not distracting at all and I would say it gives the picture a kind of depth.
Love the lighting and colours, of course.
Very well done!

Excellent capture of this mighty beast Paul, the DOF is very pleasing and the details are awesome. :)

Cracking shot Paul, beautiful warm light and detail.
Andrew.

This is a 'real' lion. Not like the half-tame ones I shoot at my zoo. Excellent Paul, you must be thrilled with this portrait of the King. I love his profile. Well captured, thank you

Hello Paul!
Excellent capture.Details are amazing.I liked colors,POV,
blurred BG,3D effect,lighting and framing a lot.TFS...:-)
PS:Your photos taken with sigma 50-500mm are very sharp and
crisp clear.I couldn't get so clear images with same lens:(
Did you tried it at 500mm against the moving subjects?
Have a nice day!

Hello Paul,

I am running behind in my critiques and have decided to expedite the process by this method, once again.

However, I did wish to give a well deserved smiley for this wonderful posting.

A brilliant, and beautifully captured flavour!

Thank you, for your understanding.
