We came across a very big herd of elephant crossing one of the big roads from Skukuza in the Kruger National Park. The herd consisted of mainly mothers and young, with a few very small calves. Unfortunately I did not get a good shot of the calves as the mothers are very protective, and they crossed the road very quickly and disappeared into the lush bushes. They were making their way to the river to cool down and play in the water.
The sun was very bright and it was difficult to get a good photo of these dark coloured animals.

Weight 6 000kg (m), 3 500kg (f)
Trunk 1,5m long
Food:
Eats about 300kg of plants, fruits, leaves and grass, and drinks about 200 litres of water in a day.
Reproduction:
22-month gestation, single calf weighing 120kg, breeds only every three to four years. |
