Hippopotamus (Seekoei) Hippopotamus amphibius
Shoulder Height 1.5met
Mass : Males 1500kg
Females 1300kg
Reputably, the animal that kills more humans than any other on the planet, hippopotamus are very aggressive.
Prefers open streches of water where there is an adequate food supply.
It can remain underwater for up to six minutes. It fills its lungs with air and sphincter muscles close the nostrils and ears to prevent the entry of water. The toes are also webbed to assist in swimming and it normally walks on the bottom under water.
During the day they rest in the water, emerging about sundown to graze on dry land. They are selective grazers taking in about 130kg in a single feed.
Mating takes place in the water and a single calf is born after a gestation period of 225 - 257 days.

This shot was taken at Mica on the Olifants river adjacent to the Kruger park. The river was running strong with very brown dirty water indicating that heavy rains had occurred upstream. The hippo in the pool ( about 15 in all ) gave us a yawning display for about 3 mins on my last day of my trip. I got about 6 shots in all. The best shot IMO was slightly blurred for which I am very angry with myself. But maybe next time.
Hope you enjoy his chompers.

Great shot Willie.
I hope it's not Callie he had for dinner,

Nice one Willie. Well captured. Love his teeth! Thanks for posting.

Very nice one, Willie - this one already called out to me on the small preview picture. Great pose you got from the hippo, nice use of the foreground grasses to frame the head in between, and for the composition it's good that on the right there is space for him to "go into". Could be a small tad sharper but looks actually fine as is. Fun caption, too :-)

'n skoot soos hierdie is al lankal op my wishlist. This is a beautiful shot and the moment is great as well.

Very well done and thanks for posting.

Punte more.

I still can't believe you can get this sort of detail from a camcorder, so I went and read a couple of reviews, which were impressive. You are certainly getting good results and they're a joy to look at and read about. Maybe not pin sharp but a damn good one, I love the POV and composition.

Willie
This is a very good post, considering how you do this. May 2005 bring you a DSRL, so that you can show us HOW to really do things!
As for having me for breakfast, well, I'm disduised as a croc, so he think I'm the neighbour.

Nice shot, Willie. I have tried so many times to "shoot" these chaps with their mouths open. Great.

Willie, I have never had the chance to be near a hippopotamus. Even though, I can "hear" his voice through your picture.

Great job. To me, the shot seems a little funny, and that's great. Excellent note and composition.
