This white faced scops owl (otus leucotis) was in a knobthorn tree with her three babies. We had been admiring the two giraffes below her and only as we were leaving did one of the guest notice the owls! This was in the Thornybush Reserve.
Information on this owl:
They are between 25-28 cm in height and live mostly on insects but also rodents and other small mammals.
They are nocturnal with a striking white face, surrounded by black edging, and large prominent black ear-tufts and eyes are orange.
The female nests from May to November laying between 2-4 white eggs a natural tree hole or on top of the nest of a hawk, dove or other species. Incubation takes about 30 days. An interesting fact is that this owl has ear openings which are twice as large as any other scops owls. |
