Those starlings are very brutal and if you have breakfast outside they can pick up the food out of your plate.

A large slender starling with dark red wing feathers. Size 27-29 cm - larger than the Laughing Dove. Afrikaans: Rooivlerkspreeu

The bill of the Red-winged Starling is short, and slightly arched. The bill, legs and feet are black.

The male Red-winged Starling is mostly a dark glossy blue-black, while the female is duller with a grey head extending to grey streaking on the upper breast and mantle. Both male and female have distinctive chestnut primaries, which are visible at rest, but very obvious in flight - appearing a large red-brown patch in the flight feathers.

The Red-winged Starling is a bird of rocky and mountainous terrain, and it breeds mostly on cliff faces. It has also adapted itself to human habitation and breeds on buildings When not breeding may wander into nearby habitats, some way away from mountains.

It is usually seen in pairs or in small flocks.

The Red-winged Starling eats fruit, insects, small vertebrates and aloe nectar.

The calls are a range of mellow, sweet whistled notes: peeeo, wheo teeteoo, piroo titoo taroo.

It nests mainly from September to February, usually raising two broods in one season. The nest is a bulky open-cupped bowl of coarse plant material, often mixed with mud, and lined with finer material. It is placed in an inaccessible position on a cliff ledge, crevace or on a bridge, building or other human structure.

Thanks for looking

Excellent close-up of a species of Starling new to me. You present it with good detail, BG and good comp. Perhaps you have a shot of the whole bird somewhere in the pipeline?

Hi Vivian

What a superb portrait you have here! This beautiful starling looks magnificent!
The POV is great, just like the DOF, but the contrast achieved with the GB is simply fantastic.
I never knew they were so...rude :))

Bravo and TFS
