White Rhinoceros - Big Five
 |
|
| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
Here is a shot of a white rhino with her cub. This photograph was taken in the Mkuze Game Reserve in the KwaZulu-Natal. We were waiting at this waterhole when suddenly we saw these rhinos coming from the bush. In this reserve there is not a lot of open area and the bush is very dense. Anyway we saw the white and black rhino so just for that it was perfect... :-)
Name: White Rhinoceros
Ceratherium simum
The name White Rhino comes from the original name "Wydt Rhino" which referred to the width of its mouth. The maximum mass of the white rhino is about 2300kg for a male and 1600kg for the female. The maximum length of its front horn is about 150cm.
The white rhino has a square upper lip, which is necessary for its grazing habit. The black rhino has a predensile hook-shape upper lip.
The black rhino is also smaller then the white rhino and more aggressive. |

Hello Stephane,
My favourite animal, you have been very lucky.
Great shot and composition.
I like it a lot.

What a thrill it must have been to see this pair. I wouldn't want to anger mama. That is a real pointy horn. Maybe it is just my monitor but I would like to see the image brightened up a bit. It is nicely exposed though and there are lots of details.
