Common Moorhen
Gallinula chloropus

Also known as: Afrikaans: Grootwaterhoender, German: Teichhuhn, French: Gallinule poule-d'eau.

It’s a medium sized slaty black bird with white flank streaks and under tail. It has a red bill with a yellow tip. (Lesser Moorhen is smaller with yellow bill with red on culmen and frontal shield only).

They are common residents and can be found worldwide except the Arctic, Southern parts of South America and Australasia. Moorhens can be found in reed beds, marshes and marginal vegetation of lakes, rivers, pans and sewage ponds. Usually found solitary or in small family groups. It spends most of day swimming in open water, wading in shallows or walking over nearby wet grasslands. Normally clambers about reeds; roosts in reeds or low bushes where it feeds on water plants, seeds, berries, molluscs, worms, arachnids, insects, tadpoles, offal and carrion.

Their nest is a neat bowl of rushes and reeds, concealed in dense aquatic vegetation and well above water level. The nest is build by both sexes. The female incubates only by day and the male at night. They may rear up to 8 broods a year. (…hence Common Moorhen?) Both parents care for the young.

Even if it is a “common” bird, I still think it’s a lovely specimen and worth sharing. Hope you like it. Sorry if I did not spend the usual amount of time on the site but I had some urgent tasks to perform at work. Hope I will have some extra time soon.

Hi Gerhard, glad to see you back here. This (like Callie's Coot) also looks like our one, except ours have more yellow legs. Great shot, especially to include the eye - it's tougher than it looks. I will post a UK Moorhen in the next few days. Well done.

PS Great title.

Well done on this capture, Gerhard.
Even with the dark plumage, you managed the clearity in the eye.
Excelent composition and details.

Superbe composition, le BG contraste bien avec le sujet. L'éclairage et la neteté sont parfaites. L'effet que l'eau produit est spécial et original. Très belle phote comme d'habitude. Félicitations !

Even if it's a "common" moorhen, for me it's not so common. This bird is fascinating. Look at the legs and the beak. Very nice capture Gerhard. Beautiful background.

Gerhard

Hi Gerhard, nice shot! Great detail of the bird and the water, even thought some part of the photo is a bit dark; but it still a great shot!

The amount of time on the site is not important for me. It is the quality of what you make during this time which really count.
You always post so neat works like this one that we can forgive you, if there is really subject for forgiveness...
Excellent shot. On my wishing list. I have aleady seen this sort in Quebec. Great composition, etc. I particulary like the foot in the water.
Thanks my friend Gerhard.

Very good image! The crystal water is perfect! Lovely colours.

Taking common birds can sometimes be a challenge because people think that its a waste of time. But your right in this case, its a beautiful specimen and you've captured it very well. I love the yellow and red legs. Perhaps the background could have been lightened a bit around the head. Well done, with a very pleasant composition.
