This is a scan of a very old slide. I used a Pentax Z1 and Sigma 100 -330 lense and Agfa 100 asa slide film. Given the age and the fact that it is scanned I thought it was worth uploading.

This owl was sitting in a dead bush in De Hoop Nature Reserve. The Park Wardens had just told me that there were some whales in the bay so I was driving down to see them (this was my first ever whale sighting). I caught sight of the owl out of the corner of my eye, so stopped, backed up, opened my window and took a couple of shots (s/he opened an eye to see what was going on), before carrying on to see the whales.

I have had a look in my copy of Newman's Birds of Southern Africa and think it is a Cape Eagle Owl - but it may just be a Spotted Eagel Owl - if anyone knows I would be grateful.

Hi James,
after having read your comment on my anteater I went looking for your images (sorry, I know this sounds terrible, but it's just as it is). I see you like travelling as well and we've been to lot of the same places. Just like the anteater it's very worthy looking in the old slides. This eagle owl is really beautiful, and moreover you captured it in an fantastic way. If you have more of these old slides I don't mind at all of posting 'very old slides'.
Yellow eyes and the more barred pattern on the breast point to the grey form of the Spotted eagle owl.
Compliments

Hi James,

I'm glad you scanned that slide! Nice owl - I love the pose and the one yellow eye! I have never seen one here during the daytime but I have heard them at night.

Oh, my favorite bird! Good to meet my yellow-eyed brother sitting so openly in the daylight. Great photo, this.

Hi James,
Very nice capture and very worth while posting. Quite similar to our Great Horned Owl. Color and details are very good. Thanks for sharing.

Hello James,
Sorry, I can't help with ID as I don't know those birds very well. This is a nice and detailed capture of this beautiful animal. I love its pose, exposure and composition. The few times I saw owls, they had their eyes closed except for one picture, all the others I have are with their eye closed. I like this nice environment and beautiful BG. Well done! Thanks,
Claudine

Hi James,
This is an excellent shot indeed. No metter how old your slides are, it would be nice to see more of them. The light on the bird is just amazing.

Great capture with a half-open eye. I remember Z1; just haven't seen too many pics taken with it. This one could have been sharper overall; but the eye is sharp enough, and that's what counts. Regards,
Hakan
